42 inch Vizio Plasma Pop No Picture

Need some help on this TV. We bought a Vizio 42" Plasma TV in about 5 or 6 years ago. The tv was on and then we heard a poping sound and the picture went black. We did some testing and have turned the lights out in the room to make it dark. We turned the Tv on and the screen came on but the picture was very grainey looks like brown redish color. There are 4 light on a on a board in the middle of the tv behind a bigger board in the middle. Only 3 of the lights come on. Dont know if these is normal. We also unplugged one the cables on the Y Sustain board turn off the tv (in the dark room) then back on and the picture came on but it was very grainey looks like brown redish color. We then turn the tv back off plugged back in the cable turned the light off turend the tv back on and got the same brown redish color font. We did replace one the 250v fuses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are several faults which can cause this. One is a bad Z-sustain / X-main, another is low supply voltages possibly from a power supply fault. First, you'll need to take pictures of the TV so everyone knows what they are dealing with.

As a general rule, the more information you give us, the more help we can give you. When you don't even bother to give us the model number of the TV, I have to assume you don't want to repair it, you just want an excuse to buy a new TV.

For a number of reasons, both health and personal, I will no longer be active on this board. Any PMs asking for assistance will be ignored.

That sounds more like a serial number. Look for a number which when inserted into Google would give you a product page or information about your TV. i.e. for a particular LG Plasma I am repairing it is 42PC3D-ZC.

Looks very typical of a Z-sustain/X-main failure. Can you take pictures of the inside of your TV?

Okay that's much more useful - we'll probably use this later when looking for the service manual and other information.

Once you post the pics of the inside of the TV, we can point out some places to make tests.

Do you have a multimeter? If not, now might be a good time to get one as you'll need one for most of these tests. You can buy a multimeter for around $5 in the US... but you'd have to ask someone American.

I can barely see those images. You need to make them bigger, and take them from the top down. The first board you've photographed looks like the power supply. The second looks a lot like the Z-sustain. There are boards on the left and right hand side of the TV. From the back, the left is the Y-sustain (row driver), and on the right is the Z-sustain (brightness, pre-charge, and erase.) A failure in the Y-sustain causes no picture almost all of the time. A failure in the Z-sustain causes a poor, slow and/or purple/lilac picture.

I agree with tom66, the pictures leave a lot to be desired, but they will suffice. The third picture is of the Z-sustain, the overwhelming odds are that has died. They are available on eBay for anywhere from $10 to $120.

There is one adjustment you may have to make when you install the replacement, that requires a DMM.

If you click on the pictures they will get bigger. I think some of the posts I have read on here it might be the Z-sustain. I saw some on ebay. I just hope this is it.

                          thanks

Hi Please can you look at this thread "Vizio standby light but will not power on" and
you will see there is a problem with whether a cable should be there or not, and if it is there where it goes. I have looked at your pictures but even when enlarged I cannot tell. Can you look at your cables and if possible take close up photos from above of the
sockets CN01 and J9 on your boards and post them on the other thread which concerns the same model, but with a different fault.
Please upload pictures using attachment function when ask for help on the repair
