If the resistor is open, replace it, that could be the only problem. It is likely the resistor just went open on its own and not a fault with the ABL circuit but would cause the brightness to be effected like in your picture

Thanks for the input, I'll post back the results next week when I get a new one in. The more I thought about how I saw how it failed, the more some simple part like a resistor makes sense since it was so sudden.

I'm glad to report that replacing that one resistor fixed the problem. I couldn't believe it at first, but yep it's good now. I've had it running for about an hour and it seems fine. There is a sort of green flash when the set first turns on, but it quickly goes away so I dunno if that will become an issue but for now I can enjoy this amazing TV and have learned a lot from this repair. Thanks to everyone who posted and I hope this can help someone in the future.

I believe that flash you see is normal on a sony as it checks the crt current, Green is the predominant color at about 59% It might be more noticeable if the G2 screen control is adjusted a bit too high. other than that it looks like you have it fixed.

Ugh. Well that was short lived.

After using it for maybe 6-8 hours the past few days with no issues, today the picture started warping and wobbling everywhere like someone was messing with the geometry settings. The sound also started getting distorted. I immediately turned it off and let it sit for a few minutes and turned it back on. Now there is no picture at all and a faint buzzing from the speakers.

I don't think there is high voltage either because I don't feel any static on the screen and I don't hear it. When I push the power button I hear a click from the power supply and then after a few seconds I hear a buzzing from the speakers.

The standby light on the front is also blinking 5 times. According to the service manual these are possible causes -

            • Video OUT (IC561) is faulty. (A Board)
            • IC355 is faulty. (A Board)
            • Screen (G2) is improperly adjusted.**

This leaves me wondering about the G2 voltage. I had messeed with it a bit and thought I got it set back to where it was. Not sure how precise this needs to be.

Given there is no high voltage, however, maybe those IC's are not getting voltage either and it's just thinking it's an issue with the video out ICs.
