    Backlight replacement mess, Vizio V505-G9

Hello, I would appreciate your expertise on this. I have about 5 years experience with copier repair, so I have done a lot of board and component replacement. This is the first LCD TV I tried to repair, and it really humbled me. The issue was that on power on the TV power light would go on and then fade out seconds later, and there was no image at all, screen stayed black.

I thought this meant there was a power board problem, not realizing that the power light fading out was by design, probably so the light would not distract the TV watcher. This is not my TV, so I wasn't familiar with it.

Replaced the power board, no change. Then replaced the main board, no change. Ordered set of back lights from shopjimmy. I was getting ready to replace the back lights, and before I started suddenly the TV started working again, but image was dark towards the bottom, then went out again. After it went out again, I used a flashlight and saw the image was still there, just no backlight to display it. Probably one strip of the back lights was dead along the bottom.

Took it all apart, replaced the back light set, put it all together again, turned it on, and got this. (see attachment)

The left half of the screen is mostly dark, there is a narrow band that works running across the bottom sixth of the screen. Also at the top is a narrow working band. There is wierd green splashes along the bottom, and in the upper left corner is a dark spot. Here is what I noticed during the repair.

There was a long green circuit board along the bottom that was attached with sticky squares, the squares stretched a lot when I was detaching the board, so it is possible I flexed this board too much and broke traces?

I could have damaged a board or a ribbon cable in the process of repair. The youtube video did not show the grey tabs along the left and right of the LCD. I don't know if these are for static dissipation or what, but I tucked them back in where they seemed to go. I had trouble getting the bezels back on, and possibly did not align the filters layers correctly, and I remember hearing a louder snap during this. I probably broke a chunk of the LCD in the upper left, hence the dark spot.

So I am past the return window for the $60 back lights by a few days. I've read the LCD is about 80 percent of the value of the TV, so if I toasted it somehow it makes sense to junk it. However, now I have a new back light set that I am stuck with. Any ideas on what is broken? I am sure it was me, but if there is a way to fix it (except the black quarter size spot) let me know.
    Thanks!

I think you broke the screen, guess the only thing to do is take it back apart and confirm or disprove that it's broken but sure looks like you cracked the top left.

which means the panel is toast, alternative is find a panel from another tv that is a match, find a matching tv with a good panel and use whatever parts you need from yours or maybe find a different tv to fix, prolly the easiest is just find another tv.

don't know your friends situation, theres a tv there that might be comparable, theres also looks like an older 37 inch for 15 bucks that might serve as a fill in, as always use caution when dealing with craigslist if you do: https://appleton.craigslist.org/ele/...580521934.html

@nomoresonys thanks for your replies. I believe I did crack the upper left corner. Could that one quarter sized area create all the image problems I am having?

yes, one little crack is all it takes, on several I had to take the bezel off to find just the slightest crack, yet the whole screen would be distorted and jumbled. Sometimes its an internal crack like in this video, thats where a backlight tester could come in handy to show the crack, which saved me a lot of troubleshooting many times because the backlights would not light up on their own: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Gg47m_f-5c

a little better explanation: led/lcd screens are a three ply lamination of two plastic sheets with an internal layer of glass where the pixels are, the glass layer is fragile and can break rather easily.

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

This happened last Saturday and today I finally had time this morning before I went to work to replace two non brand capacitors

I will let you be the judge weather or not these are bad or not according to the blue ESR meter that I am using

I am comparing them to a brand new one that I installed

The display came back on and the programming was not lost which I was surprised by I would have thought that when the display went blank that so did the memory as well

I going to let it run for several days before I remount back on the wall next to the...
