Hello, I would appreciate your expertise on this. I have about 5 years experience with copier repair, so I have done a lot of board and component replacement. This is the first LCD TV I tried to repair, and it really humbled me. The issue was that on power on the TV power light would go on and then fade out seconds later, and there was no image at all, screen stayed black.
I thought this meant there was a power board problem, not realizing that the power light fading out was by design, probably so the light would not distract the TV watcher. This is not my TV, so I wasn't familiar with it.
Replaced the power board, no change. Then replaced the main board, no change. Ordered set of back lights from shopjimmy. I was getting ready to replace the back lights, and before I started suddenly the TV started working again, but image was dark towards the bottom, then went out again. After it went out again, I used a flashlight and saw the image was still there, just no backlight to display it. Probably one strip of the back lights was dead along the bottom.
Took it all apart, replaced the back light set, put it all together again, turned it on, and got this. (see attachment)
The left half of the screen is mostly dark, there is a narrow band that works running across the bottom sixth of the screen. Also at the top is a narrow working band. There is wierd green splashes along the bottom, and in the upper left corner is a dark spot. Here is what I noticed during the repair.
There was a long green circuit board along the bottom that was attached with sticky squares, the squares stretched a lot when I was detaching the board, so it is possible I flexed this board too much and broke traces?
I could have damaged a board or a ribbon cable in the process of repair. The youtube video did not show the grey tabs along the left and right of the LCD. I don't know if these are for static dissipation or what, but I tucked them back in where they seemed to go. I had trouble getting the bezels back on, and possibly did not align the filters layers correctly, and I remember hearing a louder snap during this. I probably broke a chunk of the LCD in the upper left, hence the dark spot.
So I am past the return window for the $60 back lights by a few days. I've read the LCD is about 80 percent of the value of the TV, so if I toasted it somehow it makes sense to junk it. However, now I have a new back light set that I am stuck with. Any ideas on what is broken? I am sure it was me, but if there is a way to fix it (except the black quarter size spot) let me know.
Thanks!
