Xeon 8 Pin connector

Is it possible to use a power supply with only Xeon 8 pin connectors in a 4pin 12v socket?

It's interesting how some motherboards offer the option of both 8 pin or 4 pin but I checked the connector shape on an 8 pin Xeon connector. How do they get them to fit in the 4 pin part of the port?

I'll post a pic to demonstrate what I'm talking about:



So this is an 8 pin Xeon connector but it also takes a 4 pin P4 connector. How do the motherboard manufacturers accomplish this since there is no part of the Xeon connector with which the plastic is identical to the P4 connector so either should not fit in the others socket. The only thing I can think of is that the motherboard MFGs are just making the plastic socket not shape-specific as to accommodate either one.

So my question is, if a power supply only has a Xeon 8-pin connector, is it possible to adapt it to fit in a 4 pin P4 socket?

same way you fit a 24pin plug into a 20pin mobo - you can offset the plug so the extra pins overhang.

the other way is to extract the wires from the shell and put them in a new shell on the psu,
but you need the extraction tool to do it.

as long as there is enough space to the correct side of the socket, then yes, but the clip will not engage; it will be skew with the flange on the socket. i did that with a a64 x2 board until i fixed up my ultra V...
