I have a ChiefMax 550 watt ATX switching power supply problem. When I hit the power button the fan jerks and than nothing. I took it out of the computer and jumpered the green start wire to a black gnd. wire and hooked a CD Rom for a load and when I put power on it the Fan jerks the light on the CD Rom flashes and thats it. I have looked at all the components and no blown fuse, no bulging cap's and nothing that shows any sign of failure. I know it's cheaper to buy another but I'm fooling around trying to learn electronics, what better way than this haha. Does anyone have any idea what I should check first, would it be the high voltage side. also maybe sombody knows where i could get a schematic for this model?? Jim P.S Also it has a F12C20C Mospec rect. that I don't know how to test with a multimeter? Total of 3 on the secondary side, the other 2 I know how to check but not the Mospec??

Re: ChiefMax 550 watt ATX power supply problems
Well I think your first problem is that it's a ChiefMax...they're not known for being high quality (see here).
It'd be a good one to use to learn with though (that's what I did with my logisys/keerda and my LIC PSUs). What I'd recommend is getting a new, quality power supply for your computer, and then keep this one to play with and experiment on and upgrade.
A fan twitch and then nothing usually indicates a short on the secondary side. Check everything for shorts. MOSPEC is just a brand of semiconductors, chances are that's a 12A 200V diode pack, so you should be able to test it just like the others.
Pictures help too! Good luck! -
Re: ChiefMax 550 watt ATX power supply problems
Yes I agree It's no good, light as a feather first clue without opening it, lasted about 2 weeks and no it will never be in another computer. Open case and no transient filtering, very small transformer, very small heat sinks, just a few things even I can see and I'm just learning. But good to practice on as I can't hurt this thing haha. About this mospec F12C20C I can read the other 2 rect. ok (meter neg. on center leg, pos. on either right or left leg and about 80 ohm reading. Meter pos. on middle leg 0 ohm on right and left leg.) Wow I just looked down at my paper and when I write that down it comes out PNP and NPN?? But on this mospec that won't work or it's really shot. The big filtering coil in front of this rect. has the insulation coating melted off about 1/4 inch up from board and the board under the rect. shows signs of heat ( I pulled all 3 rect's.). I can't post pictures now, mom fell and broke both knees caps and I won't have much time (85 years old and that makes it really bad.) I want to thank you as this has already helped a lot. Thanks Again JimLast edited by jhh; 02-01-2010, 10:33 PM.Comment

Cheifmax are leadman, there is no hope for them unfortunately. I would just pitch it, or bring it to Dr.Glock like kc8adu does. He does a good job of repairing them.Comment

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?by Tynan DillI was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.
Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.
I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.
The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.
With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

by sam_sam_samI have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump
One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy... -
by sam_sam_samI have been working on this concept for quite some time now with limited success but recently I found a switching power supply that is setup for the voltage that this soldering station needs to operate at however it also needs part of the secondary circuit from the original switching power because you need several voltage rails
I once tried to get a ZD-915 desoldering station to work on a 18 volt battery power supply but unfortunately things did not go well but I did find a work around but I might try this idea again but going at a little differently more about this another time... -
by Francesc V.Hi:
I bought an ebay kit to assemble a linear power supply. The following one that is explained in this page:
https://www.qsl.net/z33t/dc_0-30v_0-3A_eng.html
The power supply seems to work, but I have the following problems I would like someone to help me.
1. The input must be about 24-26V AC. My idea was to reuse a 30VAC 160VA toroidal transformer. But with this input the output doesn't go from 0-30V......it remains with some mV. And I guess will stress/burn some components. Do you see any possible modification to... -
by shamsudeenHi all, I just need to know that, can i use SMPS type power supply to test and short circuit detection on a laptop motherboard?
I saw 95% of repair guys are using only Linear bench power supply. linear bench power supply is pricy, thats why i planned to get one SMPS supply.
i know that in linear power supply the noise will be very low comparing to SMPS supply.... - Loading...
