*most* switchmode psu's wont run without a load connected!
I Did have it connected to that psu tester at one point and when I stopped using that tester I had a couple of ide hard drives connected instead and one 3.5" floppy. I just didnt connect it to the motherboard connector which as its not a ATX psu, I didnt think it was necessary as long as I had other things connected and drawing power hence the use of hard drives as it made it easier to work on and test on my bench. Was it necessary to have a connection to the motherboard?

most psu testers load the 12v rail,
on old systems the feedback is on the 5v rail.

a spare harddrive type connector connected to a couple of 50w dichloric lamps works well.
