    Fortron FPS550-60PLN

To recap or not??? I've had this PSU for almost 3 years now and other than a mix up with the rails all has been good.. There was an 8 pin EPS that was only on rail two and for the first two years my board only had the 4-pin (which was on rail 1 ) but new MB with 8pin and all is good.. starting to have some stability issues (reboots and such).. So I figured I would rip her open one more time and take some photos for you guys and get your opinions on if I should change any of the caps to maybe cut some ripple or just make it better.. Here we go...

The Main sticker with specs and stuff

Shot of the back side, APFC full range

Top off and we see 6 Teapo 3300u 16v 105c caps and there is one black cap with gold stripe and writing that says RLG 4700u 10v 105c
There is also one green cap with gold print that is 330u 35V 105c and two other green with gold print ones that are 2200u 10V 105c

Bottom side of the top half of the PSU man there is a lot of crap packed in this shell

Top of the bottom side with heat spreader still on sinks you can see the primary caps down there

Ahhh primaries not sure what brand they are, but they are black wth grey writting but say UQ CE(M) 180u 85c and a number 3821E, there is another wee little one down there too its a Teapo 680u 10v

Oh and a fresh shot of the top board back in with the heat spreader taken off for your viewing pleasure.

I'd love your comments on this and I'd like to improve it if I can. Not afraid to tear into it, and if I do mess it up its a good excuse to get a new single rail one. If you have sugestions on what to use as replacemets if you think they are warrented that would rock too!!

    Thanks!!
    Aaron

Oh yeah, and if you have any questions ask, I'm new to this so I bet I left some valuable info out.

The primary caps are Matsushita/Panasonic TS-UQ series - good stuff. Speaking abstractly, I'd replace the Teapo O/P caps with Nichicon PW or PA series parts. PWs are very available in the US; the PA series is significantly lower Z than PW but I don't know who carries the series other than disties that want to sell in fairly large quantities. Realistically, unless those Teapos are going or gone bad or the ripple/noise is causing problems in the system, I'd be inclined to leave the O/P caps alone.

Sorry for the Newbie question but what does O/P stand for?

I do have an old Antec SL450 i'm going to cap for practice first, I use it as a +12 source for my RC Heli Lipo charger its got some domed Fuhjyyu caps in it. Which now I realize thats why when I was using it my PC started freaking out all the time.. thats when I got this FPS one.

output.the dc side of your psu.
if you toss the teapo's and make sure the fans are good it should outlast its usefullness.

Cool.. I love learning new stuff like this... I'll check out my antec SL450 again tonight and see if I cant put together a list of what I need to fix both of them and put in an order to Topcat for some caps

I'll try not to ask too many questions, Search and Google are my friends but sometime we have trouble understanding each other

did you check anything else? mobo caps, ram, hdd, software etc?

              Re: Fortron FPS550-60PLN

MB is brand new (had a waterblock issue that fried my last boards NB). Memory is fine, A reload of the OS has help 99%. My reboots now are limited to once every few days/week. even if I take my overclocking off. so thats why I point the finger maybe at the PSU. I'm still operating within its limits so I really don't want to replace it yet, but I would try a recap to see if it makes a difference.

I think that first two years I ran the whole system on just one of the two rails may have sucked some life out of it. If only i had looked in the unit instead of taking fortrons support email regarding the rails as the truth.

                Re: Fortron FPS550-60PLN

OK, assuming I'm going to do this I see Topcat sells Samxon and Rubycon. I want to go Rubycon (why not use the best??? right?)

So here is what I would need (or rather whats there now, I should have got diameters before I put it back together). What series of caps would they be? all the same or different?
                6x 3300u 16v 105c
                1x 4700u 10v 105c
                1x 330u 35V 105c
                2x 2200u 10V 105c
1x 680u 10v (not sure I need this one, it was down on the primary board.)

OH! and Willawake I love your site, all that good info in one easy to read place. I've seen a lot of that here on badcaps.net but your right, its not in the easiest format to find on a forum.

                  Re: Fortron FPS550-60PLN

Sorry for the careless shorthand Aa. As willa posted, O/P = output. I also frequently use P/S for power supply (25-year-old habit), I/P for input and Z for impedance (the vector sum of capacitive reactance and ESR). While ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) is usually used here, cap manufaturers started specifying impedance (at 100KHz) instead of ESR (at 10KHz or 20KHz) some 20 years ago. But "ESR" is less cryptic and easier to remember than "Z". And the ESR is the critical part of impedance where P/S O/P and VRM I/P & O/P caps are concerned.

                    Re: Fortron FPS550-60PLN

Update from the newbie.. I got my hands on a stack of HP DL380 G1 server PSU that were being tossed and started to play with them.. I salvaged caps off of one to fix my Antec that had bulging caps and to my surprise it worked first try!!

I just need to get a nicer Iron, but have no budget for it. Any Recommendations for someone that wont use it a ton but needs something descent? Going to do some searching here on the site but might as well add the question to this thread. Currently I just have a crappy 40W one from Radio shack that I have had since I was a kid.
