    Bestec ATX100-5 psu confusion

Hi, I have a Bestec ATX100-5 that I harvested from an emachine, I want to turn it into a general power supply for experimenting with bedini pulse motors, and I'm having a hell of a lot of trouble starting it up.

So, like usual I'm jumping pin 14 (green) on the 20 pin atx connector to a ground pin next to the green wire, but it isn't turning on like the PSUs I've messed with before. I've tried shorting every black pin to the green pin, while doing this I can see the fan move just a smidgeon, but it doesn't kick on like I would expect it to.

I did notice a couple bulging caps, which I'm looking to replace, however when I connect it to the intel mobo it was on previously, it starts right up when I jump the PSon pins on it. That's the confusing part.
It works when the mobo is connected but not without it.

So I must be overlooking something or something is different with this bestec PSU.

I'm getting about 4.66V at the green wire.

I can pretty much destroy this thing, so any ideas as to how I can get this going would be very awesome!

    Thanks, Ron

Bedini motors... I will refrain from arguing about them... may as well try !

It's possible the power supply can't start up with no load. Try attaching a hard disk or two to the power connectors. Also anything with bad caps in it can't be trusted, maybe they cause instability with no load.

Get a couple of 10 ohm 5-7w resistors and connect them to the 5v (between black and red wire) and 12v (between a black and yellow wire).

That should be enough load for the group regulation to work and then you might get something closer to 5v on the green wire.

As for Bedini motors ... no comment.

Maybe you have to jump the 5V standby to PWR_OK in addition to PS_ON to GND? See
