    Improving a Delta PSU

    Core 2 Duo E7500, 6GB DDR2
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P, 640GB WD Caviar Black
XFX Radeon 4850 (with one six-pin PCI-E connector)
    Delta DPS-400RB PSU

I built this as my main rig a bit over a year ago and plan to keep this bad girl in service for a good ten years or possibly more. She usually sees 12 hours or more of on-time per day.

The only thing that concerns me is that my Delta PSU has CapXon, Taicon, and Ltec caps. 370forlife did an awesome writeup of it (he is the one who recommended this PSU to me) here:
    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...19&postcount=3

Although it's a Delta and I'm sure it will run forever as-is, I would like to recap it. While I'm in there I would like to add a standby LED, like some of the older Bestecs have. A small LED next to the power plug that lights whenever the PSU is plugged into power. I would imagine I can achieve this by hooking the LED to +5vstandby and using a resistor to bring down the voltage for the LED.

I will get a full list of the caps in there tomorrow.

The CapXon primaries look awful small. Would putting in some primaries with a bit higher uF hurt in any way?

The fan is a temperature-controlled Yate Loon. I think it will be fine as-is.

    Thoughts and advice?

Check the height on those primaries, as I believe they are already almost touching the fan (i don't have the unit anymore, but it is powering a system very similar to yours now) I would recommend 820uf caps on the primary. Can't remember whats in there now.

You could do a recap job using the usual Samxon RS available here in 3300uf 10v and 16v. I believe the unit had 2x 20A, 100v schottky's on the 12v rail, and a 30A, 60V for both the 5v and 3.3v, so nothing really needed there. I also believe it is a two transistor forward with more than adequate ratings on those. Really doesn't need much more than a recap job.

      It's a Delta

I took it out of my PC today and jotted down all the cap values. Here are the results:
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Delta DPS-400RB A

      PRIMARY
      -------------
      2x 680uF 200v CapXon LP
      2x 0.22uF 50v Ltec TK

      SECONDARY
      -------------
      1x 100uF 35v Ltec (no other markings)
      2x 680uF 16v CapXon GL
      2x 2200uF 10v Taicon PW
      1x 3300uF 16v CapXon GL
      1x 47uF 25v Ltec TK
      1x 1000uf 10v Ltec (no other markings)
      2x 220uF 25v Ltec (no other markings)
      2x 2200uF 6.3v Ltec
      1x 0.22uF 50v Ltec TK
      -------------------------------------------------------------------------

What do you guys suggest I replace them with? I'd like to avoid Samxon and go 100% japcaps. Nichicon and Panasonic preferred.

One quick question: I only have one HDD in there right now. I plan on adding two more in the near future. Do you guys foresee this 400w Delta having any problems handling the load? (usual C2D-based system load + Radeon 4850 + 3 HDDs)

You'll be pulling no more than 200-250W with that, no worries there.

Regarding the LED on the older Bestec psu, it is hooked to the Power Good Output on the supervisory chip. When plugged in with power off, the LED is on. When you push the PS-on button, the LED momentarily goes out, then comes back on.....unless there is a problem. If Power Good signal is bad, the LED stays off.

Calculating ESR from tan delta -- tan delta's dependence on capacitance
              by Junkrepair
I'm finally recapping my Soyo K7VX6 motherboard (aka KT600 Dragon Ultra) and replacing Sacon SZ-series caps. The Sacon SZ datasheet provides a spec for tan delta, but not for ESR, while the candidate replacement caps are specified in terms of ESR.

I found this nice little description of the conversion:

              Calculating capacitor ESR from Tan(delta)
              https://forum.digikey.com/t/calculat...-from-tan/2633

It mentions that a general spec for tan delta has to be adjusted for the specific capacitance before plugging tan delta into the formula...
