i think problem was not this cap only, but some bad solder joint as pc31 it is in the B+ circuit and not in dcin.

good work however. caps is 1206 10u 25volt.

You're right, it doesn't (yet) make a lot of sense, in fact, it doesn't make any sense at all. I'll get the cap replaced ( sadly Monday is the earliest, as we do not get courier deliveries on the weekend here ). Sad when I have reels of 10uF 16V left from old production runs, but not a single 25V rated one.

some days and ull get it.

for sure, as u edited the pr61 voltage i thouth something was wrong and notebook should boot fine. so i assume some solder was not perfect and now pc power on easy.

and remember the voodoo dolls saga inside notebooks always possible too

An interesting point to note - before it would require that I hold down the on/off button for about 3 seconds before it would turn on after releasing (with the battery). Now it is more like 0.5 seconds.

Also the battery charges now when the machine is still off.

Many thanks for your help dellxps15. If you had not made me get the voltages off PU4 I would not have taken the photograph of the chip to work out which decoupling cap I could use as a voltage-read point, and I would not have seen the cracked 1206 ceramic PC31.

UPDATE: A week on, with the proper 10uF 25V ceramic caps, the laptop is going well back in the hands of the owner.

Next up is an ASUS i7 laptop with nothing at all happening. I'll start a new thread soon. Just going through my pile of "beyond economical" laptops that clients have left behind.
