    Lenovo W520 Bios Dump

I recently bricked the laptop when i selected num lock on in the bios which caused the laptop to boot loop with a restart message. I was unable to enter bios or boot selection. Since its out out of warranty Lenovo will not fix it despite its their fault for this critical flaw in their bios.

As a noob been reading a lot and bought a minipro 866 programmer to flash the bios chip on the laptop with the bios files, downloaded from the lenovo update site. When i extracted the files, i get $01C9200.FL1,$01C9210.FL2, and $01C9210.FL2

I flashed the first file to the bios chip Winbond 25Q64CVSIG but didnt work. Can anyone explain why?

Also if someone can provide me a bios dump i would be of most appreciative.

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

            Re: Lenovo W520 Bios Dump

Thank you so much Techman1025 for BIOS dump!

It sort of solved my problem, but not completely. I have W520-4270CTO
            H0222-5
            LKN-3 WS MB
            43.4KE37.051

I turned it off in the evening and in the morning it wouldn't start up. After flashing with your BIOS now laptop starts, but

            a) LCD does not show anything, there is video on VGA. Stuck into it another LCD (regular kind, HD 720p from a regular noutbook), even not one but two different LCDs, and there is video but there is not backlight. Original LCD from W520 I did stick into another notebook, there is backlight, but LCD shows in green, perhaps this is due to the fact that it is FHD and that other notebook is HD.

            b) There is a BIOS password on this new BIOS, I'll have to take it off. I do have the tool.

Quick question. Can this BIOS be responsible for not showing video on LCD or not turning on backlight? I'm thinking no, but I need opinion.

I also need schemanic for this motherboard. Need to check backlight driver and lid close sensor.

Attached is my original BIOS with which my notebook does not turn on.

Bios would have nothing to do with just backlight out ..Check display switch ...display cable see if you are getting the 19V & 3V at connecter also..How is a external monitor look?

                Re: Lenovo W520 Bios Dump

Checked LCD cable, even disassembled it, look good.

Readings on CN21 (pg 32) measured at LCD & at CN21 on motherboard

                Pin 40, 39, 38 -- VBL20 -- 20V
                Pin 2, 3 -- VCC3P -- 3.31V
                Pin 4 -- VCC3B -- 3.36V

F1 on pg32 the one between VINT20 and VBL20 was blown, made jumper. Nada, zero reaction.

External monitor on VGA looks good.

What's my problem where to look next?

Do you also have PCB layout or board view?

                    Re: Lenovo W520 Bios Dump

                    SOLVED!!

It was C361 (pg 32), it was kind of shot, giving 100 kOhms. Removed it, and got my backlight back on. I was getting no power on BACKLIGHT_ON pin, and shorting onto it the near PANEL_BKLT_CTRL (which had 3 volts) gave no results, C361 was taking power down into ground, bastard.

I also replaced (well shorted) blown fuses F24, F3 (pg 32) these are responsible for Mic and Holla sensor (lid switch), and also F1 (pg 32) this gives 20V to LCD.

Now everything works great! All I have left to do is remove BIOS password, reassemble my noutbook and play some tanks. Kavakaz23 on NAE server.

                        Re: Lenovo W520 Bios Dump

                        P.S.

Prior to this happening to my notebook - in the evening turned it off, unplug it from power, put it on the table, in the morning it turned on once to windows 10 boot screen, then stopped doing anything -- I had this problem with my LCD. I thought LCD is bad. Now after fixing, as described in previous post, basically 3 fuses, 1 cap, BIOS, and EEPROM password removal using Joe's KeyMaker, my LCD does not have artifacts that it had before. Just an afterthought, perhaps these types of artifacts on LCD are an indication of things to happen.

P.S.S. Plugging and unplugging connectors on LCD and motherboard did nothing. Sticking this LCD into another notebook showed that LCD is good. Sticking another LCD into W520 showed no artifacts.

                        Stange things!
