    820-00850 with shorted LDOs

    Hello all,

    I am trying to repair one of my relative's dead 2018 MacBook Pro A1989. It stopped charging all of a sudden but was still working on battery until it was depleted.

    It shows the following symtoms:
    • Power on 3 of the USB-C ports cycles from 5V 0.25 A to approx. 1A
    • On the 4th USB-C power stays at 5V 0.25A but if I flip the USB-C power plug the meter does not light up

    UB300 is the CD3215 associated with the 4th port. There is no visible damage around UB300 or the port itself.

    I checked PP20V_USBC_TA_VBUS and it is stable at 5V.

    However PP3V3_UPC_TA_LDO, PP1V8_UPC_TA_LDOA, PP1V8_UPC_TA_LDOD, PP1V1_UPC_TA_LDO_BMC are all shorted to ground.

    Do you think it is a bad CD3215 or could it be something else?

    Thank you.

    Yes, bad cd3215. Each cd3215 must be working to select the 20V power delivery contract.

    Often the fault of fake PD chargers that are not designed properly to cut costs that kill this ACE controller.

    Sourcing replacement cd3215 can be a headache. Check for a good vendor on AliExpress or use a donor board of the same and reball it.

      Thanks for the lightning fast answer mon2.

      I will look at vendors with good feedback to source the replacement CD3215C00 then.

      Do you think it is worth checking for other components that might have been damaged now or is it better to wait until I have replaced the faulty CD3215?

        Remove all power. Meter in DIODE mode.

        Red probe, yes red to ground.
        Black probe to pin to test.

        Check the diode readings of CC1 and also CC2 pins of each CD3215 controller.

        Post each measurement. Suspecting that the non-functional port will have different readings.

        See this excellent webpage and case studies on this topic:

          Re: 820-00850 with shorted LDOs

          Thanks again.

          Here are the readings:
          USBC_TA_CC1 = 0.57 V (takes time to stabilize)
          USBC_TA_CC2 = 0.48 V (takes time to stabilize)
          USBC_TB_CC1 = 0.61 V
          USBC_TB_CC2 = 0.61 V
          USBC_XA_CC1 = 0.60 V
          USBC_XA_CC2 = 0.60 V
          USBC_XB_CC1 = 0.61 V
          USBC_XB_CC2 = 0.61 V

          Definitely different. So diodes QB630 and QB640 have also gone bad?

          Thanks for the pointer to the Wiki. This is the page I used to start troubleshooting but I stopped measurements at step 2 when I saw all LDOs were shorted.

            MacBook Pro A1707 Motherboard Diagnostic Help – CD3215 heating and Fluctuating Rails
            by Cemal Odabasioglu
            Hello everyone,

            I'm currently diagnosing a MacBook Pro A1707 motherboard that does not power on. I've gathered some data but am stuck and need expert advice.
            Note that i'm a beginner in electronics and i'm trying to learn while trying to repair this macbook that my work gave me. I'm really curious and love understanding how thing works and i already learned so much.

            Only one usb c port is taking 20v and have 12.5v on PPBUS_G3H. when trying other ports, 2 are not going to 20v and one is going to 20v but the CD3215 is getting really hot.

            Observations...

            Acer Alienware Nitro 5 (GH51G LA-L181P Rev: 1C) & Dell Alienware M15 (GDP50 LA-k452P Rev:1) - Both Shorted PCH (SRKMA)!
            by reessi
            Hello:

            I have both these laptops that appeared to have the same fault so I thought I would have a go at replacing the PCH as something to learn, they both are using the same PCH.

            I started on the ACER:

            Up on connecting power no signs of life but current is consumed from the bench power supply and the PCH is hot.
            All the caps on the top of the PCH are showing 0 ohms and the 3.3v rail is shorted.

            I followed the videos from Sorin, Electronics Repair School on Youtube heating from the bottom to install. I practised on around 10 scrap...

            Panasonic TC-P50S1 shorted TXNSC1EDUU (TNPA4782AB) SC Board
            by Yanleb
            Hi every one. I just want to share the successful repair of my shorted Panasonic TNPA4782AB SC board.

            I don't usually do it but so many parts were shorted that I decided to buy the ShopJimmy repair kit instead of sourcing each components individually. Here is the list of components the kit contained, with a remark indicating if I needed that part or not :

            D608, good
            D618 RF101L4S, good (See warning 1 below)
            D619 RF101L4S, good (See warning 1 below)
            D865 RF101L4S, shorted (See warning 1 below)

            HP Victus 15-FA1025NL , board DAG3PAMB8D0 REV:D, shorted CPU DrMOS and n-mos
            by modtool
            Hi to all,
            the owner of this machine gave it to me after having opened it to take off the dust from the inside, telling me that after that it didn't start anymore.
            I found that one of the DrMOS (AOZ5016QI) on the CPUCORE was shorted between VIN and VSWH, and that one of the two n-mos connected to the power jack was shorted aswell.
            I unsoldered the two shorted components and verified that there were no other short circuits, then decided to power the mainboard, firstly with the lab power supply, then with its original HP 200w charger, but the behaviour is the same, the board starts...

            A1706 - 5v due short 3.3v LDO
            by iMuhtaseb
            Board was OK but after keyboard replacement; we found short on 3.3 LDO on UB300 (CD3215).. I removed it and of course I tore off some pads because its undefiled.. pads are repaired successfully.. diode and continuity tests done Pads were USB_UPC_TA_F_P and TP_UPC_TA_SWD_DATA and UPC_TA_SPI_MISO..

            After replacing UB300 the watts consumption lowered since short is gone but still is stuck @ 5v (0.06amps)

            I noticed few balls around UB400 so I assumed it needed reball; reballed and replaced it; still 5v.. on both sides

            While on the other wing U3200 and U3100...
