    NEED HELP! Battery issue - AA06XL - HP ZBOOK 17 G4

AA06XL is based on BQ30Z55 controller with RQ3E180BN mosfet and D6SA sefuse

Pre-Story: Battery was deep discharged (month attached to zbook with lowest charge) So cell voltage was 3.2V.

ICP596080C (Capacity: 7860(x2 3930) mah, Nominal: 8420 (x2 4210) mah) cells was disassembled and charged with 500 (the best for discharged cells) mah chargers and placed back.

But after fully charged, there is 0 voltage on connector. Mosfets are closed and fuse is closed. Fuse bypass didn't solved mosfets opening.

What could be wrong, except fuse?

Do you see a voltage on the battery connector after it is charged by your external method?

Do not connect to the laptop and confirm that there is a voltage on the pre-charged battery.

        Thanks for quick response!
No voltage on battery connector. x6 cells was charged directly. I cannot charge battery through connector, because of dead D6SA. But if i bypass fuse with jumper wire, that make no difference

Currently trying map traces to figure out connections

          Re: NEED HELP! Battery issue - AA06XL - HP ZBOOK 17 G4

          After deeper research, results:

Mosfet which is responsible for output partially opening when battery is connected to laptop.

          Initialization sequence I have:
When ac connected, 3.3v on smbus arriving for few seconds. The heater in fuse receives 12 volts to burn it again. So controller is stuck at status to disconnect battery source. Maybe controller requires flashing or replacement

The BMS circuit will be a design that only the vendor will know about. Doubt it that the firmware will be available to the public. For safety reasons, the entire battery pack should be replaced and sourced from a supplier that will take it back if the pack is garbage. Suggest to work with Amazon so that you will have some teeth to be able to return it just in case the pack does not hold up. Repairing battery packs is a serious fire hazard.

The battery has only 6 charge cycles. So that's almost new. Ordered USB-to-SMBus CP2112, will try to restore Sealed status

Not sure if that board mapping is good enough, as i have not tested all traces, but sharing as JPG.

              Later will report results

CP2112 arrived, will try to reset battery

also have found some new connections onboard. Also at last gate should be 21V to activate a battery. Fuses will arrive tommorow

To disable controller vcc and prevent it from brick ( sealed) only need to desolder 12v

                      SOLVED
                      Okay.

I brough donor battery for 15$ with bumped cells. Then dissasemble it, then desolder 12V cell pin to power off battery controller. after it i have to desolder other voltages - 8v, 4v, GND

Using hotgun i unsolder BMC and FUSE. I have made same with repearing battery. so FUSE and BMC was replaced.

After board got cold, i solder back GND cell wire. then 4v, 8v, and last is 12v which also VCC of BMC.

NOTE: all cells was charged to 4.2v to prevent sealing of controller.

After 12V was arrived to BMC, the BMS begin to reset itself and alll mosffets become open. after a minute, all voltages at connector arrived.

Good news - that is working great. also i have made few full charge-discharge cycles to let BMC recalibrate itself.

Bad news - i see 149 cycles, not 5 as before. But it working great!!!

Well done!! You have larger gonads than myself to attempt this repair at the battery pack level. Safety would be my biggest concern. Be sure there are no thermal faults with the repaired pack but very interesting that you fixed it. Believe you can alter the charge count over the I2C bus but not sure of the register to alter.

                          Thanks for your help!

Also i have found a really cheap way of unsealing of battery (i mean this is good for only reasons when it was discharged accidentally, do not recommend to do it if it was a safety protection scenario). So method: using LPT adapter with 74LS05, read and patch registers with UBRT software. It costs for 10$ for a day usage and free demo to learn it. 10$ its enough for one battery recovery. But in my case or my lpt port was faulty or I have made wrong adapter. But have no conformation that LPT port at least is working.

                            We manufacture LPT ports.

What do you need ? For PCI? PCIe?

Forget the usb lpt dongles, they suck.

I do have a motherboard with lpt port.

Thanks for info! That's a great program supposed to be!

The software is actually is installing pl2303 (usb to RS232 device), actually could be used with additional RS232 to smbus converter!

It would be a good option if they would make a cheap 10-15$ controller and software with One day license option. But as we all know, the cheap way is to buy a new battery instead of buying 200-500$ stuff

Actually, battery after BMC replacement is working fine so far. A few days using it and really happy)
