Apple MBP A1706 with greyed out audio

Hi All, I have a A1706 MBP that recently went to have the keyboard replaced under the recall program. Apparently this involves replacing the upper shell with battery and then fitting the existing logic boards into the new shell. Upon return it appears that the MBP has no audio. Upon booting the chime sounds but once booted the OS shows no audio input or output devices. Is it possible that the replacement shell was faulty that would cause this or perhaps the connectors to the speakers/mic left disconnected? Looking for some advice from some one who may have experience in the repair of these. Thanks in advance.

Yes I am planning on that but wondering if there is any information that I can use to convince them that they broke it. it is a certified Apple dealer but I suspect that they will just say that the logic board needs replacing. The hardware test performed by holding down D at start reports no failures. And it does make a chime at start. Is it possible that they have no reconnected the lopgic board properly? The speaker icon on the menu is just greyed out and there is no visible output or input available. Which is odd.

Try to reset the PRAM and test again:

This is the OS itself saying there is no audio components. I tried a clean install on an external SSD (as I'm still running catalina). This showed the same end result in that there is no audio components. The hardware check again says that it passes.

Hi @Mon2, I've tried a PRAM reset and a SMC reset and neither return the audio components. The hardware test after doing this says everything passes. Thanks for the suggestion.

Given that you have a boot chime, the (hardware) audio amp and speakers are fine.

Try a more recent operating system and please read the advice posted here:

Hi @Mon2, I'm currently running Catalina 10.15.7 with the latest patches. I don't want to run Big Sur as it has issues with external monitors and resolutions. Its the only later version available. I tried the midi option from that page but it shows no options. Its odd that the chime at start works but then there is no other available audio devices when Catalina finishes booting. I've tried PRAM reset for 3 times but the end result is the same....sound at PRAM reset but then nothing once the OS has started.

                    Try:

Does this logic board feature headphone jacks?

if nothing helps, try to install mac os on a external device (i.e. ssd) and check if the problem is solved with native os.

@rediii I had tried an external SSD and a new install of mojave and also Catalina. I returned it to the Apple store that did the keyboard replacement. They stated that they have not seen any thing like this happen previously. They ordered and replaced the case again assuming that the sound components that were in the new case were faulty. Unfortunately the same issue persisted. They have now ordered a new logic board hoping that this addresses the problem. I'm suspicous that Apple changed design of the sound components along the way somewhere and that my logic board does not recognise the newer versions. Jus a theory as it does seem odd that a perfectly working sound system does not work when you replace the sound components.....Will see what I get back in return. For a simple keyboard return program its consumed alot of time loss.

Thanks all for the reply but I really do think this is down to Apple and design issue I suspect.

well machine finally returned. Went in under the keyboard recall and ended up with everything but the display replaced and 3 weeks later (mind you 1 week was lock down but..) seems odd that to correct a keyboard design issue that you need to go to this extreme but at least its now got sound. Thanks for the feedback. I now need to upgrade the machine as it was returned from Apple with 10.12 (Sierra) on it!
