Acer Aspire 5742 defective ram slot

    Board LA-5893P Rev: 1.0
So I've got this laptop that turns on but no video. Start pulling out rams at first only to notice it fires correctly with only one. Tested both rams separatly with memtest and they checked out to be good so I came to the conclussion that DIMM1 slot is defective but can a slot really be defective?
I checked the board but found no problems(to my best of skills) with it and I can only wonder if the fault is not within the PCH.
I'd like to know how other people solve this dilemma.

If you do not see any visible damage on the RAM slot and its pins, it is probably not defective. Now, try to find if any pin of the slot is shorted to GND.

NOT PCH. The memory controller on all Core i series is integrated onto the CPU, it is the smaller die of the two which also houses the graphics chip. Probe the DIMM slot and if all looks ok, try another CPU. If it still doesn't work, check the traces from DIMM slot to CPU socket. If you have boardview it will help you greatly.

Good reading. The client however turned up in my shop and told him that the laptop works with one ram so he requested to put together the laptop and will use it this way for the time being.
        Thanks for the answers.

for ram slot, i have ram slot tester. once problem was a pin... i heated ram slot with hot air and pushed the plastic down a bit and it was working again just fine. other time on new notebook can be a bad cpu or bad cpu circuit or bad ram slot on mainboard.
