Hi guys
I have a HP Pavilion dv6 here to fix. When I first got it, the laptop would shut down after 10-15 mins or so when turned on from cold, even if just idling.
Using HWMonitor the core temperature would read about 70c and quickly rise up towards 90c+ if there was amount of processor load happening, such as when loading an app. The fan was rather noisy too. After a short time the screen would go blank, then the PC would shut down. Once it had cooled you could restart it (it would say restoring windows and boot back to HWMonitor running so it must have been shutting down properly, not crashing)
I stripped it down and cleaned all the brown sh!t and crap out of the processor fan (why do people smoke when using laptops!??!
) using a paint brush then compressed air.
Once rebuilt, it is now running much cooler (around 53C idling). I run it for an hour or so no problem, then gave it a bit of work to do - playing music via Windows Media Player with Alchemy Vizualizer.
If I then overlay the HWMonitor window over the visualizer I can see the core temp at about 80C but with the monitor window over the visualizer it will climb up to 98C or 99C. It seems the overlaid window increases the CPU load generating the vizualizer. A couple of times i got it to hit 100C but the fan then works fast and almost instantly drops it back to about 90C.
This is all with laptop flat on the desk, if I prop up the edge near the fan about 1 inch from the desk, it drops by about 10 degrees
My question is - have I fixed it or is it still running too hot? After cleaning it's never shut down even when I got it to hit 100C core temp
The laptop has no battery fitted (customer has lost or chucked it!)
FWIW - and it must make a difference - I'm in south Gran Canaria so ambient outdoor temp is 26C today. I have workshop windows open so it is about the same.
