MacBook Pro black screen with backlight

    Hello!

i bought a "water-damaged" macbook pro 13,3" mid 2012 A1287 with 820-3115b logicboard. RAM and display were not working and not booting, so i cleaned everything with alcohol and now it boots up fine, but the display is still not working. it has working backlight, but its just black screen.
i hooked up my external monitor and it works perfectly. everything works except the display.

the internal monitor gets recognized as a 13,9" 1280x1024 75hz monitor.
if i disconnect the internal display and access the macbook via screensharing there shows up an 23" display, which isnt connected.

so i checked the internal displays EDID and it is corrupt as you can see on the attachment. so i went on and tested the screen and lvds cable on another macbook and it worked perfectly.
i gave a look at the lvds connector and there was a pin looking strange so i thought the connector could be bad. i have board schematics and everything i need from this forum (thank you!) and it turned out that this strange pin is for led backlight, which is working!.

i am not very experienced with stuff like that, so i was just able to test if there is GND on the connector where it should be and if there is some kind of connection between the pins and the smd-parts where it should be. i have not tested voltage and stuff, because i have no idea how. i do not have the tools for this, just a cheap multimeter and a cheap soldering iron - but videos from louis rossmann proof that it could be done with this stuff

sooo, what i am asking for is just your opinion, what should i do now?
i cant se a damaged component on the board, so i think it must be the lvds connector itself. since everything else works fine i do not believe the pantherpoint chipset is damaged.

i live in austria, no one here wants to repair logicboards.. everyone tells me "oh it must be a bad logicboard, get a new one".. i think i would be able to swap out the lvds connector, if you could help me to enclose the problem. if i should measure something you have to tell me how i have to do this.. i am afraid of damaging the board so i just went on with continuity testing.

sorry for my bad english, i hope you can understand where my problem is and i hope you can help me.

    nice greetings from austria

I think it may be the GPU problem. apply heat on the gpu and take a look.

        thank you for your answer!
the gpu is integrated into the cpu, so i think it could be the chipset?

also: thunderbolt doesnt work, my thunderbolt harddrive does not power on. but external monitor via displayport (same connector) works fine?!

Re: MacBook Pro black screen with backlight

Okay, very old thread here but I thought I'd comment anyway.
I just got a mid 2012 MacBook Pro for free, but only the backlight works, just a black screen after the startup chime.
I can't see any broken capacitors, and the board is in mint condition, with maybe a slight bit of corrosion on the touchpad connector on the motherboard but I don't see that as having any effect on the display.
Let me know if you see this.
          Kind Regards,
          Sunny

Macbook 2017 with touchbar (A1706) won't turn on after removing the screen
            by Ryan.man
Hello everybody! Posting this in hopes somebody has some expertise that leads to a clear path of troubleshooting that saves me a lot of time!

My macbook has the flex cable problem, the one that prevents the screen turning on. Ive been dealing with this for the last 3 years. Last year it went dead and I managed to fix it following youtube tutorials. But my fix wasnt the best, the problem returned a month later. This week, it went dead again. I again tried to fix it.

This time the original cable broke too close to the screen, it can't be fixed without tearing the screen...

Macbook Air M2 A2681 Kernel panics after screen replacement
            by reformatt
Just had a customer bring in a M2 MBA A2681 that had had a screen replacement in April at another repairer. Since then, she has been getting intermittent kernel panics. It's an aftermarket screen, and of course it fails in diagnostics as the calibration hasn't been done. The error in the panic log is "No device added after powering on the rails".

It seems the original repairer has swapped the board and the screen to other MAC's, and said that it isn't a screen issue. From what I understand, by doing a quick search on Google, this is in fact a screen issue. The panic relates...

MacBook Air M1 A2337 Screen Replacement - keeping TrueTone
            by MagJ_
            Hello Everybody,

I have a cracked screen and want to fix it. Usually, TrueTone will be gone as long as one does not prune open the screen and exchange only the LCD. However, I have seen the following Youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBNqhp6p_ZM, Solve MacBook M1 Pro screen true tone issue from the channel Master Liu, where only two chips called "display control chip" and "code chip" are swapped over to the new screen. I know, it is for the MacBookPro version. Though, I had the hope that it could work similarly for the MacBook Air as well.

Macbook Pro 16" A2141 screen artefacts, kernel panic
            by sofles
            Hi there.

I have Macbook Pro 16" 2019, model number A2141, motherboard number 820-01700. I have some problem with dedicated graphic card. When Macbook switches to dedicated GPU it is getting instantly hot and starts to show glitches on screen, then it freezes (trackpad is not clicking anymore) and shuts down.
I tried to reinstall MacOS But it was a pain, it started to show glitches in middle of installation and I could not finish it. I only was able to reinstall MacOS when I put Macbook outside (it is winter and -2 Celcius).

Now situation looks like this, If...

MacBook A1990 vertical stripes on external screen
            by ahoonid
            Hey everyone,

I bought a MacBook A1990 with no screen. I bought it knowing the motherboard was defective but wasn't sure what the problem was until I received it. It actually turns on but as you see from the attachment, it has vertical stripes, on an external screen!!

The board is neat. Not opened before for sure. Just a little dust, nothing more.

Recovery using wifi can be opened, as can also be seen in the photo but it doesn't go all the way through after connecting it to a wifi. It downloads the initial Recovery files but never completes the rest of the...
