I have a Lenovo Legion 5 15IMH05H 81y6003yUS that someone asked me to help them with a failing SSD. I installed a new SSD, fresh Win11 installation, updates, etc. Very standard stuff and everything was completed. He said he'll pick it up in a few days so I shut it down and set it aside.
A few days later came and now it won't POST an image, keyboard lights up, fans spin then shuts itself off after about 40 seconds. I've already tried the typical draining capacitance and removed CMOS battery, etc. No display on an external HDMI monitor as well.. No idea what happened. Suspected a BIOS corruption since I did run updates and sometimes a bad BIOS update will come through. So I reprogrammed the chip (thanks for help in the BIOS request forums - very fast response over there!). But the problem persists. I noticed the caps lock key is responsive, but wasn't sure what that means since the computer would keep shutting down after 40 seconds and no display on the external HDMI monitor. But I decided to disconnect the LCD cable from the motherboard and try an external HDMI monitor again - it POSTed this time on the external monitor and I was able to enter the BIOS. And it didn't shut down after 40 seconds either. I reconnected the LCD cable to the motherboard again, confirmed no LCD display and started shutting down again after 40 seconds (but now it will display on the external HDMI monitor, but it also shuts down after 40 seconds like before). Appears to be some kind of issue when connecting the LCD cable to the motherboard. When the cable is disconnected, it stays running on an external monitor, but when reconnected it'll shut down after 40 seconds. Either the LCD, cable or motherboard is shutting down the computer in 40 seconds when the cable is connected. .
Normally would disassemble the lid and check the LCD screen. But I don't have a screen like this to test and there's a good amount of adhesive to remove the screen from the lid/bezel. I will do it if I felt certain the problem was there. But I can't help but think this could be motherboard related. Specifically the GPU. I don't have the schematics or boardview files. I'm not a component level tech, but have been successful with these repairs with assistance (as a novice). Since the laptop failed in my possession, I feel responsible. Getting prepared this could be a very expensive motherboard I'll have to pay for. So any help would be appreciated...
BTW: I will pull the motherboard and post pictures if apparent the motherboard could be causing this. Hoping for some advice.
