    Armani13 5370 vostro 5370 strange issues

    Hi everyone, thanks for your time to look at a my problem.
    This type has a secondary IO board that has WIFI card slot, 2 USB port, microSD reader and the power button.
    The problem started when laptop serial cable slided out the slot and therefore it shorted 5v to ground.
    Secondary board connector is melted, cable is toast so I have replaced them and since 5V generator chip got partialy shorted i replaced it too "PU8900"
    Now laptop starts and system seeing USB pendrive, windows installs fine and works fine, no unkown devices or anything after drivers installation BUT ...

    1. Whatever else I connect to USB the computer does not see it.(mouse, keyboard, phone) only USB pendrives can be seen and wokr fine reading and writeing also
    (If a phone is connected then is starts charging but no options for file transfer or anything)
    In BIOS also no mouse of keyboard so its not windows problem.
    2. Another starange thing is that WIFI card does not displayed anywhere, like its not connected at al.

    Anyone has any faint idea why is this?

    I think you should get some reading at the USBN4/P4 and USBN1/P1 pins on the motherboard connector CON5103, and the diode readings should measure similar to each other
    I'm afraid you have a partially damaged CPU, best case cracked solder balls if the laptop was damaged by dropping it
    Or bad traces near CON5103 if it's confirmed that the laptop was dropped, as the 5V according to schematics doesn't go near those data lines, it's on the opposite end of the connector

    For WiFi to be detected you need

    PCIE6_WLAN_RXP
    PCIE6_WLAN_RXN
    PCIE6_WLAN_TXP (before C5133)
    PCIE6_WLAN_TXN (before C5134)
    CLKPCIE_WLAN_N1
    CLKPCIE_WLAN_P1
    CLK_PCIE_WLAN_REQ#
    PLT_RST#_BUF
    +3P3V

    Besides replacing the motherboard or reballing the CPU, the only workaround would be to use a USB-C hub/dock and an external USB WiFi dongle

      The unrecognized USB devices may be slower than the pendrives that are working. That is, pendrive may be USB 3.x which will use different interface lines than USB 2.x / USB 1.x designs like the HID model mouse / keyboard.

      Respectively, confirm if the USB D+ / D- pins are ok on the port under test. Remove all power. Meter in DIODE mode. Red meter lead, yes RED to ground. Black meter probe to D+ pin on the USB connector. What is the voltage measurement in diode mode? No power to the board during this test.

      Repeat for D- pin.

        I think you are on to something. its always nice to learn something
        USB 2.0 pendrives are not working only USB 3.0

        First USB-s have 0.712 on D+ and 0.695 on D-
        Second USB have OL on both.

        What could be the issue?

          A dead USB2.0-Controller inside of the Chipset, except you find something else being wrong.

          I did not understand in full, what "serial cable" has slipped in particular. Maybe it will reveal something when you tell us more about this incident in detail.

            What's the point of measuring Resistance to GND on D+/D-(data lines) when pen drive is working?

            Since USB3.0 is working and USB2.0 is not working, it has something to do with usb2.0 circuit.

              The serial cable is held ín place by a secure clip that is loosen somehow(probably dropped the laptop) and the cable slipped out of the connector. Therefore the 3 pins that provide 5v on the side is shorted to ground.

              I would live with only usb 3.0 working. But what about the wifi card?

                On the first 10 pins of the connector
                USBP4 USBN4 go to one of the USB ports on the I/O board, USBP1 USBN1 go to the other USB port, those data lines are used for USB 2.0, the USB 3 data lines are separate
                Unfortunately they go directly to the CPU/PCH, unless the failure point is on the 50 pin connector on the motherboard side

                Same for CLKPCIE_WLAN_N1 and CLKPCIE_WLAN_P1, straight to the CPU/PCH, I'm suspecting those pins as they're near the affected USB pins
                There's also the USB data lines nearby which go to the SD card reader, fingerprint sensor and the Bluetooth portion of the wifi card

                Measure in diode mode those pins, on the motherboard side 50 pin connector that goes to the I/O board

                Still we don't know what's that "serial cable", is it the 50 pin cable that goes from the motherboard to the I/O board?

                    USBN4- OL

                    USBP4- OL
                    USBN1 - 0.0 (resistance shows 1,3 Ohm short to ground when main board connected and OL if main board are not connected through 50pin I/O cable - so assuming CPU short)
                    USBP1 - OL
                    CLKPCIE_WLAN_N1 - 0.810
                    CLKPCIE_WLAN_P1 - 0.810

                      USBN4- OL
                      USBP4- OL
                      USBN1 - 0.0 (resistance shows 1,3 Ohm short to ground when main board connected and OL if main board are not connected through 50pin I/O cable - so assuming CPU short)
                      USBP1 - OL
                      Unplug the cable, and check on the motherboard

                      As those signals go straight to the CPU
                      Also check C5133 and C5134 if not damaged, those go to the PCIE TX signals to the wifi card

                            USB-C hub/dock works normal so i think i will use it as workaround since I dont want to experiment with CPU reflow/reball for a 100 laptop.
