    Clarification on T2 ICloud unlock

    Hello everyone,

my dear father passed away a year ago, leaving his 2020 Intel Macbook Air (A2179) behind. He also left notes on his passwords, which i tried when i wanted to reset the device. Apparently, i tried too often and i'm now left with a locked device, that only wants internet recovery and nothing else, saying that the password was used too often. I gave Apple a call, explaining the situation, but they refused to help.

I'm not that much of an Apple guy, but i can do some micro soldering. I read that replacing the T2 chip is an option. Others wrote that replacing the SSD is an option. While others say that Nand, T2 and PCH are matched and all of them require replacement. It's all a bit confusing and sometimes contradictory.

Checkm8 , T203 and stuff don't seem to be an option for this 2020 Intel model. Least i can say is that it got the new Bridge installed, i remember it had 16gigs of RAM, SSD size is unknown as well as the CPU.

The Interwebz is full with unlock scam and i'm not getting to a point where i want to go this or that way because of all that uncertainty.

Is there any definitve truth in this maze of information? Do i have a brick or can i do something about that?

I did read the forum rules and the section rules. I am not sure where i am compromising them. If so, apologies, this wasn't my intention.

I did not yet buy any 1.8V ROM reader or a T203 because i don't know if it would justify the expense for this one time usage only.

Why is the BIOS backup upload needed if i may ask?

I'd first try and find out your fathers Apple ID for this MAC, and try to reset the password if you have access to his email or another of his Apple devices. Failing that, if you have the original proof of purchase of the device, Apple will remove the activation lock off the MAC. You can then just reset it via recovery mode using the Erase MAC option or via DFU restore. To remove iCloud lock on T2 machines, you have to replace the T2 with a donor from an unlocked board. The cost and complexity of this does not make it worth it on a Intel Air MAC. Replacement motherboard is another option from a machine with broken display etc off eBay or China.

CheckM8 should be an option for this machine. It is only a bypass, as the activation lock is server side with Apple.
