    A1181 coreduo => core2duo upgrade cpu

    so i have a working logic board out of my macbook a1181 2.0 DualCore Intel
    and i got this board i got of ebay that looks exactly the same except it has a core 2 duo 2.0 4mb of cache isntead of 2mb. now ive heard someone trying of doing this saying you have to replace the efi bios or whatnot. Anybody thinks this is possible with rework equipment of course.

    the ebay board is faulty apparently but havent tested it yet. because keyboard needs fixing for the power button to work.

    i wander if i just pop the c2d out and reball it and stick it on the working one.

    just a project idea. i also wanna paint the thing purple for my misses.

    Thanks

      i would say you *always* want the latest bios when doing a cpu upgrade - specially intel.
      if you can swap the cpu, why not also swap the bios - if it wont boot first of course.

      btw, is this one of those aluminium-case jobs??
      because if it is - i hope the new cpu has a lower W rating - those things run so hot you can iron your shirt with one!

        i dont see that big difference..... only 15-20% on a low cpu aint so much.

        generally to power a mac without a keyboard you have to short g3hot .

        dunno on this board where the 2 pins are located.

          ill try that
          the fan temp sensors heve different connectors so gotta solder them on since i only have one heatsink/fan

          thanks is it same pin on the black and white macbooks? thats the case we are dealing with.

          thanks for your contributions.

            it might not be worth the effort. if it was the 2.4 then maybe.

              Re: A1181 coreduo => core2duo upgrade cpu

              so i replaced a cpu in the mac, wanted a challenge and now i got one lol.

              so the reballing / flowing went well, except some micro caps moved around a bit but got them to sit good again.

              i plug ac in and smoke comes from underneath. Turned it around and this weird looking cap idk what type of cap it is, or even if its a cap.

              <=-*1

              at that time i noticed some micro cap mofos that came off a bit, i really gotta take more care and not tape up tings that dnt need taping up, it was shorting something probably so luckily i got a spare 1181 mobo lying around to match and compare stuff. so fixed the mini caps, and replaced the bigger lookin cap *1.

              So replaced that

              then re plugged it in, another one starts smoking.

              replaced that,

              then another one started smoking.

              then i replaced that and no more smoke.

              now when i try to turn it on fan gives off a slightest little nudge and the hard drive powers on

              however the cpu / gpu / nortbridge area not even warm.

              when i hold the power button again it turns off the hdd.

              NOW

              Questions

              1. Did anyone ever experience this sort of blown caps smoking and one after another. After reball process?
              im thinking since i moved my tc up away from my heating element on puhui it gets really hot underneath, i might have killed off some caps.

              2. What do you guys i recommend do next. ?

              i replaced the core duo with a core 2 duo.

              3. Is my reballing not yet up to par?

              thanks guys hope you will give me some insight.

              I was going to reflow
              the current setup just to make sure the balls have joined up well, im a bit skeptical i did that right.

              as my first step.. and if that didnt work i was going to put back the old cpu back on and see if get any joy.

              i mean i got 2 mobos i must make 1 work..... i need the practice and extra experience since got no work atm.

              so im just on this atm.

              getting flyers in next couple of days hopefully get some business wid them

              sorry for rambling....

              thanks in advance

                i think that's a polymer cap.

                was it near the cpu with a bunch of others?

                you need to find the vrm circuit & see if a fet is shorted.

                  lol...the CPU's got some pinouts/signals different I think...Did You check the datasheet???
                  Also the core 2 duo one is compatible only with Mobile Intel 945PM...

                      near the cpu there are these 2 coils. check if they are shorted. and if not when u power on check voltage coming there.

                      cpu underside got same pinouts?

                      PS: blown caps only after power on ?

                                      yes, that coils. u have to put black wire on metal (usb firewire lan and so on)

                                      and red in one side of coil.

                                      i use multimeter in diode test mode. if it is shorted, i remove coil and see if short is in wich side, but most likely bad cpu bga
