Macbook Pro A1989 - No image, working fine with external monitor

    Hi everyone,

I have a MacBook Pro A1989 that was likely exposed to liquid. It doesn't display an image on the built-in screen, but the screen is backlit (you can't see the Apple logo or any other elements when held up to light). The laptop provides 20V and 1.5-2A, and it works fine when I use it with an external monitor. Currently, the connector for the display (J8500) is disconnected. I'm writing to ask for help in diagnosing the issue. I've heard that when the J8500 is exposed to liquid, the processor pin responsible for the display might short-circuit, and I'd like to know how I can diagnose this problem and confirm this fault with 100% certainty. I have a multimeter and a boardview, so I can take measurements. Thank you very much for your advice.

Device: Macbook Pro A1989 board number: 820-00850

When you get liquid into the connector, 50V from the backlight spills into the data line adjacent to it that goes to the CPU. Pin1 (EDP_INT_AUX_N) usually reads near short to ground in this instance. Only solution is to replace the CPU or just use external monitor.

I have 09.33k ohms on pin 1 (edp_int_aux_n) relative to ground.

I also noticed a burned trace along with the ferrite bead L8504 and connected the traces with a wire, but I'm not sure if I correctly understood how the connection should be made (I'm attaching a photo).

After this fix, the screen worked and displayed an image, but after turning the laptop on again, the screen is blank once more.

That is for the Ambient Light Sensor for the camera. If that is burnt, there is often damage in the flex connectors on the display assembly itself. There are two that are unpluggable, one for backlight, the other for the camera. Check both for liquid damage.

There are no visible signs of liquid damage, but I suspect that someone was there before me. I only found bends on the flex, but I doubt they are significant enough to cause the laptop to not display any image.

Is there anything else I could check? Unfortunately, I don't have a replacement screen.

That's pretty typical of flex cable damage from dirt/dust/sand ingress and I see that all the time. Display failure is quite common as a result. Sometimes you get vertical bars instead.

As far as I know, Apple is the only one that has this shitty design with flat ribbon cables and having them exposed to foreign material via a gap at the base. They've also known about it since 2016, and here we are in 2024 with the same shit design. No one seems to call them out for it. Apple has set expectations with their customer base that their laptops are only good for around 4 years or so. Most just accept it and buy another machine.

The question is whether such a flex could be the reason for the complete lack of an image. I would like to eliminate the risk of a motherboard malfunction before attempting to repair the display flex. What could I check to eliminate the possibility of a motherboard issue before I cut the display flex?

                Hi everyone,

I need your help with this repair that I’m working on at the moment, it’s a Macbook Pro A1989 board number: 820-00850A.
When i got the laptop from the customer the laptop just booted up with the charger connected but with no display or backlight.
i found out that the charging ports were slightly burned so i replaced it but the fault was resolved, so my next step was to check the board and found out that
both charging Ic’s was faulty and i ordered 2 new ic’s and replaced them.

After i replaced the ic’s the laptop boots up and keep...

Aorus 17G YD laptop, broken display, could not switch to external monitor
                by ArchangelGabriel
Hello guys! I need a little help, I have one laptop for repair, it is an Aorus 17G YD, gaming laptop. Broken display, some cable ripped form daughter board connector, case broken, battery discharged and probably locked, etc. After I did the most tedious job I ever did on soldering back the broken cables (shielded cable) , I measured resistance on CPU and GPU core, 3 and 5 v ps and any coils I find on the board, everything seems to be fine. After I plugged the charger I don't get the power led light on from the charger connection maybe because the battery is locked , but on power button I have

How to force Acer Aspire Series to bootup BIOS/UEFI on external Monitor?
                by maralexbar
I ask this question in general as there are many Acer Aspire models with UEFI Insyde BIOS that do not boot to the BIOS on an external monitor (VGA, HDMI, etc) showing only the Internal LCD (LVDS, eDP etc).
It's a pain to work on Acer notebooks with a broken screen and not being able to access the BIOS using an external monitor.

If anyone knows how to force the external monitor as primary for Notebooks of those models

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
                by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

AOC 27 monitor Q27G2WG4 doesn't display logo or image on screen
                by 3D Modelka
Hello. I have a problem with my AOC 27 monitor, specifically model Q27G2WG4, which I have been using for 3 years. The monitor stopped turning on: when I turn it on, the backlight turns on, the indicator starts glowing white, but the logo on the screen does not appear, and there is no image. However, if I check in the Windows system, the monitor is displayed as connected and working. I tried connecting it via HDMI and DP, but the result remains the same. If I turn the monitor on and off multiple times, it will eventually start and work. However, when the monitor is working, there are no issues....
