My Toshiba Satellite A215-S5837 has a cracked B154EW02 V.5 screen

    But would a V.1 version be a drop-in replacement?

It's the lowest price I found for a working unit:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/15-4-Compaq-...item45ff1b205b

Although it looks to have top and bottom metal tabs that are
not included in the V.5 version......

    Thanks for any advice....

You can remove those metal tabs.

I have switched lcds that weren't particularly the same "version" but worked regardless.

ok, thanks. I would assume the newer versions
would supposedly be better, but perhaps not noticably.

Ok, so I've gotten my replacement screen:

        http://www.ebay.com/itm/250958909868...84.m1439.l2649

And it appears to work well, except I have to set the brightness
control to the highest setting, in order to get a good brightness.

And the angle of viewing is rather narrow (usually the case with
LCD, but not usually this bad).

Is this because I didn't replace the inverter circuit (the narrow
circuit board in the Ebay post)? Or should all inverters work
pretty much the same? I just used the original inverter in
        the laptop.

It's a pain in the ass to remove the screen, so I don't want to
switch the inverter if it's not likely to improve the brightness, because the
screen is bright enough to use, I'd just like to have a bit more
        leeway.

        Thanks in advance.....

Screen brightness is usually controlled by the inverter, when a screen's light goes out it's usually the inverter so I'm guessing a new inverter could potentially make things better.

It's either that or an aging CCFL lamp.

But are these inverters "matched" to each model and brand of
            screen?

In other words, should i have used the inverter that the
            replacement screen came with?

It didn't seem critical, because most replacement screens
            are sold without any inverters.....

Yes and no. 99% of laptop screens use the same standards for connectors, voltage, etc. Odds are the inverters are perfectly compatible. Desktop LCDs are a different story altogether and don't always have interchangeable components.

If a used screen is dim, it usually means that the backlights don't have a whole lot of life left. I find that older Samsung screens are dim, where as older LG or AUO/Quanta screens stay a bit brighter as they age. These aren't hard and fast rules, just observations I've made. You may want to let it warm up for several minutes first. It's not usually as pronounced in laptops, but some larger desktop LCDs take several minutes to reach full brightness.

Yes, after a few minutes, the screen is definitely brighter.

Perhaps I'll stay away from Samsung the next time I get
a used screen, but it's not really a problem, as it's a perfectly
usable screen. I just wanted a bit of wiggle room, and not
                just a maxed out brightness.

                Thanks for the info....
