I'm wondering if I should just give up trying to repair this laptop...
One morning I came to my Gateway MT6460 Laptop computer, and it was turning on and off all by itself in about 10 second intervals. It would not post.
Well, I removed the IDE hard drive and got the data out of it and into another computer, but in doing so I somehow put a HDD password on it, so I bought a new hard drive (beside the point, but this is why I am reinstalling Vista).
So, first, I reseated the processor, which got me no results, still not posting and the light blinking. Then I unplugged the CMOS battery and let drain. Bingo, I could post. I went into Bios and reset the bios to default settings and started to reinstall Vista.
My first try at reinstalling went great, I completely installed the operating system and all of the windows updates. Then it crashed again, exactly how it was like before with the blinking lights and no posts.
I did the same procedures to reinstall windows again, but this time it would crash within a few minutes or even after resetting cmos battery it still wouldn't work.
Well I noticed some pretty severe cuts on the aluminum of the heat-sink which even allowed some of the glue holding the aluminum to the heatsink to get through. So I ordered another heatsink/fan (and of course when I got the part, the was a nice dent bubble on the aluminum already, but I'm guessing that's not too big of a deal).
Well, with the new heatsink fan, the computer worked for about an hour and a half. It crashed when installing windows updates (at a different point of installation then last time it crashed).
It now behaves the same way it did before, it just keeps restarting itself after 10 seconds or so...
okay, so I talked to someone he said I maybe have a bad capacitor on the motherboard...
I don't think it is a capacitor, but it looks like the mobo might be missing a black "thing". Looks like there are 3 black "things" in a column with one missing. See attachment. It also looks like it just attachs to the top of the mobo with a little solder.
There should be a black "thing" here making a connection, right?
the mobo labels that connection PC234. It is next to the connections PC265 and PC266. (by the way, the second one in the picture isn't damaged, that sploch on the picture is glue)
Where do I go to find more information on this? Google isn't helping much. What is that missing "thing"?
Thank you for your help!!
