    Toshiba Satellite A200 Inverter

A friend of mine dripped off his Toshiba laptop with a black screen. I pulled the screen apart and found that the inverter was the problem the lamp tested ok. Question is; the inverter is such a small board is it repairable? or cheaper to buy new. Is there a common fault to look for?

The components on those laptop inverters are super small. I find replacements on ebay for a very reasonable $5 to $7 USD (with free shipping). They mainly come from the far east and take 2 to 4 weeks to arrive, but they do work.

Thanks retiredcaps that was my next question. I saw those and was wondering if they did work? not a bad price considering other sites are offering them for 80.00 $ My order is gone and I will give them a try when it come.

Just sorting by price on ebay.ca, I see multiple buy it now with free shipping for $5.01 CDN.

I'll bet you will get it from the same seller I got mine from even though they all have different seller names.

Mine came in a pink cardbox box with bubble wrap protecting the inverter.

Received the inverter today and installed it. The thing worked fine but now after awhile the screen will go black as before but if I change the resolution it will come back on, or if I restart it comes on ok for a while but than goes black again. When I connect to an external monitor it lights up on both. What is going on??? anyone.

I take it this was purchased from some vendor in China. And it's new? I figure for $5.99 plus free ship, there was probably very little or no quality control involved. You may have gotten a bad inverter. Sometimes a used OEM inverter is much better than some of the "new" stuff out there.

Have you tried turning down the brightness? Maybe it's getting saturated and shutting down.

I agree that you might have gotten a bad inverter. You may want to send the ebay seller an email and ask about warranty/refund or non working items (or pull up the old auction and review the terms).

I have had one or two non working items from far east sellers and they have always refunded me without any hassle.

However, before, assuming that the inverter is bad, maybe something else wrong with the laptop? Did your friend drop the laptop at any point?

When you pulled the screen apart, is it possible that one of the connectors or wiring is not fully connected?

Thanks jetadm123 Ya when ever I make any adjustments to the display it comes back on, which I find odd? I though if the inverter was dead it would not light up at all? Could it be a software problem? although I changed the video driver.

Thanks again retiredcaps I have not reopened the display but I will. The auction was listed as used so I don't know of there would be any warranty?

Most have a 7 day warranty, but some require that you ship the item back. Since shipping FROM Canada to anywhere is ridiculously high, I would just eat the cost and keep the part. However, I always contact the seller first, explain the situation, and let them have an opportunity to make it right.

If it does turn out to be a bad inverter, I honestly would take another chance and order yet another inverter off ebay (done it before). If you get the exact same problem, I would think the odds of getting 2 bad inverters would be low and that would point to something else wrong.

Sound advise thanks retiredcaps. I have reopened the display and checked the connections all seem to be ok but I will leave it open and order another inverter for what it cost. Thanks again.

Ask your friend if he/she ever noticed any pinkish/redish hue before the screen died? As ccfl's age, they draw more power.

You could have a bad wiring, ageing ccfls, etc. See

My friend indicates that there was no unusual sympations at all his wife was using it and it just went black. The laptop is only three years old seems to be early for bad lamps. I reinstalled the old inverter and the lamps will not light at all.

I read somewhere that some "cheap" lamps will only last 10,000 hours? So depending on usage, abuse, brightness settings, and quality of the OEM lamps, it is possible that 3 years of usage that the lamps are dying.

If there were my laptop, I would try another $5 ebay inverter as I stated before.

This might be marketing BS to sell more lamps, but (the "strain" might also explain why the original inverter died and why the replacement needs the brightness decreased?)

Q: What is the typical life of a CCFL lamp?

A: The typical rated life of a CCFL backlight is 20,000 to 40,000 hours, however when used in LCD applications such as laptops you should expect between 1.5 and 3 years of use from most manufacturers.

Q: How do I figure out if I need to replace my backlight?

A: As CCFL lamps age they require more and more voltage to stay lit. This puts a tremendous strain on the inverter that powers the lamp.

I have never noticed this before; This site lists the strike voltage, working voltage, and watts of the different length ccfls for laptops and LCD screens, I do not see anything listed for the diameter.
Maybe with the help of PlainBill we could find an acceptable length of a ccfl to use for testing.I honestly do not think my mind will allow me to do the math, I hurt so bad sometimes it's hard to think.
Thinking about it maybe a resistor could be temporally substituted, and then monitoring the ac voltage of the return wire to see if the inverter is commanding the back light to be on.
                                      Al.

Whatever I do, I consider it a success, if in the end I am breathing, seeing, feeling and hearing!

If there were my laptop, I would try another $5 ebay inverter as I stated before.
Thanks I have ordered another and see what happens. Some great info though and his screen is flickering when the brightness is turned down?
