    A2159 821-00583A Macbook Pro short

Hello everyone. This is my first post and I am hoping to learn from the experts that help out. My daughter had a HDMI dongle connected to the laptop and when she went to disconnect a static shock went through her and to the Usb port. The computer shut down and would not start. She took it to the authorized repair at London Drugs and they charged her $70 and told her the logic board would need to be replaced for $1000 +.

I removed the logic board and connected to Usb digital tester and it reads
    5.17 volts
    .48 amps
Stuck there and not going any further.
    Checked power pbus 4.54v
    Checked power pp3v3_g3h_rtc 0 volts
Checked pp3v3_g3h_rtc to ground and it is shorted.
    Noticed U3200 (CD3217) very hot
    U3100 not hot

Can someone please advise me the next step?

    Thankyou

    London drugs??? Seriously?

If the cd3217 is hot then likely it is defective. From the logiwiki / repair wiki / Scriptures by @Piernov, check the voltage to ground of the LDO rails on the cd3217 that is getting hot. It may need to be replaced.

The cd3217 devices are available from AliExpress in Shenzhen, China. Try Exinra or similar. Post the link of the vendor before buying.

    Next ppbus is too low.

This rail is a buck boost regulator. It should boost the voltage when 5 volts on the external power adapter is present.

It should lower (buck) mode the voltage when the cd3217 finally negotiates a 20v contract from the adapter.

Each cd3217 (aka ACE controller) must be functional before 20v can be selected. The hot ace controller is probably causing the logic board to fail.

Remove all power. Meter in resistance mode.

Measure the resistance to ground of the ppbus_g3h rail or whatever it is called in this logic board.

Likely driven by the isl9240 regulator. I can check after wolfing a late dinner and some law and order.

Would you have air tools? Tweezers? Or access to someone with such equipment?

      Thanks for the quick reply.
LDO rail 1.01 vdc to ground
      ppbus_g3h open no short
I will order a couple cd3217 and a hot air station, flux and paste. Looks like a tricky one for a first timer. I have soldered with an iron alot but not with hot air. I will practice and post when I have the cd3217 removed and check for short.

        Very good.

When shopping for the ACE controllers, CD3217 part, do inform the vendor on the logic board you will use.

For the hot air tool, get one that can support the higher heat as the pcb is a multilayer one with ground plane. We use the Best 863 but likely there are more advanced models by now.

Also consider to pick up the paste stencil for the cd3217 and a fixture so that you can reball the bga device, if required. Do watch YouTube videos on reballing bga devices.

Do practice on other pcbs. Some techs prefer to pull the cd3217 from a donor board of the same model.

Keep note of the bga chip orientation.

The cd3217 has multiple LDO rails, check each to confirm that each is working.

Two potential issues. One is getting a couple of CD3217 that aren't fake, and second, these may be underfilled. The latter isn't something to do for a first timer doing BGA rework. Suggest you take it to someone with a bit more experience if you're not comfortable with it.
