I did see this thread over at Eevblog. Pretty much everything I know about the U1253B is here. There was a drop in replacement available from some Chinese vendor at some point, but it was on some Chinese website and very hard to get, until the drop in replacement I got.
So far I see a bunch of talk and files but haven't seen a working DMM on this. There are 2 distinctive problems:
1) the column shift problem because of the display size, as the new displays are 4 columns shorter than the original one.
2] the mirror image problem.
Rewriting a bunch of code is cool by me, but when I was talking to the Agilent tech back then, he was saying that the DMM had to be sent in, then they sent it somewhere else if it had to get a replacement display as the firmware was different and could not be loaded by the end user. Anyway… time will tell… let's see how that thread at Eevblog goes on.
