Sony CCD-V90E analogue camcorder - any bad caps?

    Hi all,

Does anybody have any experience with these old Sony camcorders.

I understand that Sony had a bad run with electrolytic capacitors fitted to many of their camcorder models. I opened this one up today expecting to see the tell tale signs of swollen and leaky caps, but I didn't find any with obvious physical symptoms.

You'll have to look closely around the capacitors to see if there has been any leakage. Old capacitors like these, and of which are small (like these), tend to leak. I do see some flux on the board too though. The leaking capacitor will cause corrosion on metal, so look for that too.

What are the symptoms this camcorder has?

      Hi ben7,

I only quickly checked it before I pulled it apart but the symptom was basically that the video playback in the viewfinder had the bottom 20 percent missing, with a very unstable white band tearing and fluctuating with bright flashing at the bottom. A 20 second head clean with a dry cleaner had no effect. The same cassette in another player worked fine.

It might be that the display itself is bad too.

Yeh I suppose that's possible. I'll reassemble it tomorrow and see if it plays back on the TV.
