    Freebie calculator

Well I haven't posted a fix in a while so here you go. I know this probably won't turn out as an epic thread since most people don't bother fixing the free calculators that they get at trade shows... but I guess I am weird like that.

The problem was that this little calculator was not working right. It would turn on but when you pressed the '9' key it would go off. I thought maybe it was the battery since it is several years old now. But when I got it apart the battery voltage tested good. So there is not much more to do for this guy since it is basically all chip on board (COB). But there was one .1uf capacitor sitting there so I thought what the heck, I'll unsolder it. I did and the calculator now wouldn't turn on. I tested the cap on my meter and the value was fluctuating, it never stabilized. So maybe I have found the problem. I dug up a new .1uf cap and it metered out a stable value. I soldered it in and now my little calculator is fixed! It can do five nines of uptime without so much as a whimper. Even though I lifted the traces for the capacitor in the process, a little hot glue secured everything nicely.

So there you have it, another item saved. And even though I have been trained that non 'lytics don't usually fail, I am going to guess that the ones that they put in free giveaway calculators are about the absolute cheapest ones available and thus likely to go bad.

Some folks at eevblog are calculator fans. Maybe post over there?

Good job on the repair and documenting the process. I have a few < $5 broken multimeters that I'm trying to fix more as a learning process.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

      Nice work!

It may only be a cheap calculator, but with repairs like this, item cost is not what is important. Rather it's what you learned from the repair.

I guess this goes to show that people here on badcaps.net can fix anything .

LG 55EA870V with partial life, but no picture - Freebie again
        by olegeisler
Got this 55" OLED for free - the manual found on Elektrotanya and attached here, but it is maybe the worst service manual I have ever seen...

        Symptoms :

No picture, nothing, but can be operated on/off with the remote control, power consumption goes to around 60W when ON, and the main CPU and big BGA on "Tcon" gets hot. All voltages mentioned in the service manual are present.

The LG LOGO comes with a single "heartbeat" at power on, and I have seen a handful of bright dots on the lower part of the panel at power off a couple...

SHARP AQUOS LC-70LE836S only blinking - freebie
        by olegeisler
Got this SHARP AQUOS LC-70LE836S for free - did some basic troubleshooting, and found manual - without detail schematics though. Comes from a meeting room with extremely few working hours.

        Symptoms :

When connected to mains, the logo blinks continously, approx 6 times per 10 seconds.

A press on MENU as per the manual changes this to one short blink, one long and then repeats.

Only 5V ( Standby ) on PSU module present, no AC_DETECT, no 12V, no 13V, no PS_ON from mainboard.

As I see it mainboard has some kind of life, but does not...

        Vizio D55un-E1, bad Q9100, C9100 & R9111, parts ordering questions
        by DXseekerMO
Hello everyone, I just sourced a Vizio D55un-E1 with no status light at any time. Here's what I know:

        First referenced this thread: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...light=d55un-e1

Complaint: After a power outage the TV will not turn on with no indication of a status light.

Findings: Complaint verified. Q9100 is short gate to source but neither of these are short to drain. R9111 is blown, board has a scorch mark next to the resistor. C9100 is blown with a hole in one side. U9101 appears unharmed as do the other board components....

Need help with Low voltage protection circuit
        by flinx
I am trying to design a circuit based on this circuit:

I substituted an IRF5305PBF for the Si4425BDY because I wanted a TO-220 package I think I misunderstood the datasheet as I am not sure what voltage turns on the Mosfet.

        I am using this TL431ACLPR

I then tried to find a calculator to determine the resistor values for R1 and R2. The resistor values I tried did not work the way I expected.

The source for the original circuit describes it turning off the mosfet at 18.2v and back on at about 19. No matter what combination of resistors...

Elektronika EPOS-73A stuck with fixed display
        by carlitosbala
        Hi,

I'm hoping I can get some ideas on what to check in this old (1978) soviet-era electronic calculator I got from a flea market, the Elektronika EPOS-73A.

Got it home and plugged it in. It worked just fine at first, I used it a few times for a few minutes each time, "kid with new toy" style.

Then I disassembled it to clean the plastic case and the keys. I couldn't separate the lower half of the case from the board because cables are tied to it, so during the cleanup one of the cables going from the power board to the main board detached,...
