MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4G error 43.

    Hello everyone.

I am asking for your help in diagnosing an MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4G (V316 1.1).
It displays error code 43 and 0 MB under GPU-Z.
No artifacts and 0 errors with MATS.
It starts up normally, the resolution is normal.
I can flash the bios, but it doesn't change a thing.
Visual fault on the SLI port.

    Thank you.

You've identified the problem. The two missing gold fingers have traces going to them. Compare against a pin out of the socket to see what is missing. https://pinouts.ru/Slots/pci_express_pinout.shtml

      Hello diif.

      Thank you for your reply.
Unfortunately, I admit that I do not fully understand it.
You asked me to compare with a pin of the PCI-Express 16x port?
If I read the diagram correctly the two missing golden fingers are MIOA_RASTER_SYNC1 and MIOA_CLKOUT.
So as not to waste your time, in your experience is this fault repairable?

      Thanks for your help.

It is repairable and he is saying to check the pins to see what you are missing. Restoring those may not fix Error43 but it likely will in this case (given the evidence provided).

Those pins essentially let the PC know what GPU it's working with so right now it's showing error. Restore those pins and you'll likely be ok

          Hello WayOfTheRoad.

          Thank you for your reply.
i will try to fix those pin.
Any advice for this work ?
Did i need to scratch the board to restore the lines ?

          Thanks.

Hello again and no problem at all

Yes, you will want to be very delicate and scratch away at the traces leading to the missing pins. It is the very thin lines running to the areas.

Scratch away carefully to reveal the copper. Then, you can use wire or copper lugs but you'll want to adhere it to the missing pad area then connect to the thin traces with wire. The key being that the "new pads" be strong enough to not rip off when inserted into a PCIE slot.

For any help/tips, just YouTube "PCB trace repair" (or similar terms). You'll find dozens and dozens of people showing the best methods.

If you need any particular help along the way don't be afraid to ask. Myself and many others here will offer what help we can.

            Good luck!

              Hello WayOfTheRoad.

              Thank you.
I want to clarify once again that the damage is on the SLI pins and not on the PCIE port.
To make sure we understand each other.

              Regards.

Two pads have been ripped off, they need to be replaced and joined to their traces.
You might want to check the socket it was last plugged into, those missing pads might be loose and could cause other problems.

If they don't want to use SLI there is no point in fixing the SLI bridge header. However knowing how it was damaged may help, because it may have damaged something else (and could have damaged the GPU itself).

Oh! Yeah, no need if it's just SLI. Sorry for assuming it was PCIE as I just took a quick look.

If not using SLI you can leave it. If using SLI, the info given applies.

                      Hello everyone.

The card has been mounted in an SLI system.
It worked randomly depending on the user.
It is possible that it suffered damage related to the SLI port or other (may be dead GPU ???).
If we forget about the missing pins, I would like to know if anyone has already dealt with the symptoms detailed in the photo (Attached Thumbnails).
                      No memory error with Mats.
                      No artifacts.
Normal HD 1080 resolution on my screen.
0 GB instead of 4 GB with GPU-Z
                      And finally error 43.

                      Thanks everyone.

Can you take a screenshot of GPUZ and post here? 0GB mixed with a few other things often denote a dead memory controller in the GPU chip.

                            Sorry! Haha
I'd make up something like "it isn't loading" or the like but that would be a lie. I straight-up didn't see it lol.

So, it has pretty typical reports (or lack thereof) but it also usually fails to report a memory clock speed when definitely bad. Not always but usually. Some report purely from BIOS but others won't report that when the internal GPU Chip memory controller is bad.

I have this exact card with with a bad internal controller and it *doesn't* show clock speed. So, you have some hope but I'm not sure where to go from here.

I could post some measurements if you like, to check against a known bad internal controller. The only thing that wouldn't be definite is that I think the 5v rail is also shorted but is kept for parts so my memory (no pun intended) may not be accurate. I only recall with certainty that it has a failed GPU memory controller.

Let me know if that could help you.
