    MSI K8N Neo-4 Platnium (7125.v1, Bios: 1.B): 3 vented caps, HELP!

    Hi fellow Badcaps forum members!

First, thanks for taking the time to read this over and maybe even offer me some advice.

Ok, so currently my system is running stable, although I did have a DIMM module fail on me recently (Corsair Value Select PC3200, 1gb DIMM, 184pin, C3), but I RMAed it and a replacement is on the way. I currently am running on 1 stick of 1 gb ram

Anyways, when messing with the ram I noticed that one capacitor on my MOBO had vented and had oozed a small amount of the tan/brown electrolyte solution out of the top (see attached image, denoted with red circle). After closer inspection I found 2 other caps were bulging/venting nearby (in attachment, circled in yellow, next to FX-55 heatsink/cpu).

All 3 suspect caps are marked "KZG - 6.3v - 3300uf" and from eyeballing I believe they are the 10mm diameter/25 mm height variety, although they are in an area that height would NOT be a restriction (please see attached picture).

As far as doing the work myself, I have a lot of experience with car audio, soldering, electronics and Ive built my last 3 systems from the ground up. So, no problems here after checking out this comprehensive site, but:

    Questions:
    1) Since my mobo is running fine, should I get the caps now and wait till my mobo fails or repair asap? How long can a MOBO last with bad caps? Do i risk future hardware death?

    2) What sort of capacitor should I replace with? Brands: I can choose from are Sanyo, panasonic, nippon chemicon, rubycon, KZG (exact same cap, just new), some other no-name Japanese and taiwan caps. ESR: what value is ideal for this?

    3) There are 6 identical caps near the heatsink/cpu (3 of which have signs of problems)...should I just replace all of these, even the ones that appear visually ok?

    4) I dont have a capacitance meter, just voltage and resistance meter, will i be able to get away with this?

    Thanks,
    Matt

    Answers:

    1) Yes. Seconds, minutes, hours, days - how are you at craps? Yes.
    2) In order to provide a good answer, what's the make & model of board? Then the values and quantity of each type of cap with the model (like the KZG) of everything over 330uF. Also check down by the RAM slots, may have caused the bad stick. ESR - equal or better than original.
    3) ALL.
    4) You'll need a soldering iron, solder sucker, solder. See the info on the left side of the main site page http://www.badcaps.net on How To remove and replace.

Oh, I made a mistake the 6 caps near the CPU are not all identical:

        5x KZG 6.3v 3300uf
1x 16v 1000uf appears to be a Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors - Radial Lead, appears higher quality do i need to replace this one? It appears good to go.

I saw in a post by Willawake that this was a legit cap "://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=588" this guy looks like a rubicon."

        Thanks again Toasty

"I don't understand your answer to question 1:..."

Sorry, my 1st answer should have been-

No, yes. Seconds, minutes, hours, days - how are you at craps? Yes.

          ...and again:
"...so I need to replace these bad caps now?"

          Yes

"appears higher quality do i need to replace this one? It appears good to go."
You've given zero info about the cap other than it's value, and my psychic powers are weak today. Whose brand is it? What series is it? Is it a brand on the known bad caps list?

Essentially, you need to read some more on the site. Any cap on the list should be replaced. Certain brands regardless should be replaced. If you're there fixing 1/2 the caps, it's just as easy to do the rest.

I am hoping someone on here has done one of your type boards before and can provide a list of what you'll need.

Also, post back with your power supply (PSU) make & model. Crack it open and have a look for the same problem(s) there.

          Once again:
Please provide the values and quantity of each type of cap with the model (like the KZG) of everything over 330uF or any caps with the X or T marks on top. More pics (side views) generally help with identification.

          Like this:
          6 - United Chemicon KZG 1500uF 16V

          Then we can best advise.

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!
            by momaka
I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

            https://www.badcaps.net/filedata/fetch?id=3591772

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

            Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
            by eryjus
            Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
            by Paxman_Swede
            Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

Help with switching power supply caps
            by captain150
I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...

            Gigabyte GA-6OXT :: caps question
            by Foetuss
            Good evening

I recently aquired a rev 1.1 Gigabyte 60XT, and was suprised of the amount of leaking caps for a motherboard of the P3 era. Especially the way the 330µf caps seems like the housing discolored even.
Now, there are some 3300µF 6.3V KZG series around the CPU. Would it be OK to replace them with something like EEUFR1A332 ? (Panasonic FR 3300µF 10V). Or was this board designed around very low ESR caps?

But I was also suprised about the bigger boys, which are 330µF 25V.
Could it be they used 25V caps because they were cheaper / available at that time?...
