I have a collection of Dell Inspirons and 1 HP mini pro system (desktops) that do not turn on normally. Occasionally they will work normally but most of the time you have to fiddle with them to get them to turn on.
To get them to turn on I have to do things like tap the button 20+ times. Or sometimes they will turn on if I hold the button for 5-10 seconds. Sometimes I have to unplug and replug power multiple times before it will work. It also seems like pulling CMOS battery or clearing CMOS with jumper helps things somewhat. This HP will sometimes come on just by plugging in the PSU. At other times they just refuse to come on no matter what you do.
When they do turn on, it seems you can shut down and turn them on again without problem. The problem only returns if you shut down for an extended time, or you unplug the PSU.
For some of the Dells, it seems I can bring them back to life by heating up the board first. Then they will turn on/off reliably for a while. No luck with this on the HP.
Generally, what could cause something like this in desktop computer? The heat fix on the Dells makes me thing a BGA is not making a connection when it's cold, but that's just a theory. BIOS maybe? Any suggestions are appreciated.
