    Intel d850mv mystery cap

    I decided to replace the caps in an old motherboard for fun. The main blown capacitor, however, appears unlabeled except for the top, where the bulge has made it mostly unreadable. What you can see, especially after scraping off the residue, is:
    "HD K3
    1x00
    10V"
    The x in "1x00" is an unreadable digit, and searches for HD K3 have turned up nothing useful. I'm guessing it is either 1000uF or 1500uF? The diameter is 10mm.

    Anyone have any insight into what uF this might be? Oh and pardon the dust, these pictures were taken just after it was removed from the closet and before it was dusted off. =)

    It could possibly, but not necessarily, be the same value as the caps next to it.

    If Intel ran out of caps from one supplier they might substitute caps from another.

      It's a Nichicon HD series - I recognize both the logo and the series designation. You migh check Nichicon's catalog online to see what is offered in that part's case size and in the HD series. If it is in parallel with other identical parts, use the same series or an equivalent series from another vendor (UCC KZE or Rubycon ZL).

        Thank you both!

        After browsing Nichicon's catalog for the HD series I found only one item with the same diameter and length with 10V and it shows it as 1500uF. Also, the caps next to the Nichicon are Sanyo 6.3V 1500uF, so I think 1500 is the best bet.

          A Nichicon HD failure, and it's near the PSU ATX connectors, not the VRM output. Definitely a busted PSU feeding that 850 mobo, probably overvoltage on +5v and/or +5Vsb.

                Yup, it's just a regular Nichicon HD Aqueous Aluminium Electrolytic, but supposed to be better for the environment because they've eliminated the outer black plastic sleeve and used a transparent lacquer finish on bare aluminium instead. The values are printed on top for better visibility.

                    Polymer ("solid") caps also fail, e.g. the Fujitsu polymer types mentioned in several threads here.

                      Redshift: The only visible difference between an Aluminium Electrolytic in a bare-metal can and a Solid Polymer-Aluminium in a bare-metal can is that the former will have vent lines scored on the top, while the latter may not - but this may not be a distinguishing feature for the smaller values (<470 uF), which may not have score lines for either type.

                      The other characteristic is that SPAs are typically found in lower values on a motherboard - say 560/4v .. 820/4v. Electrolytics in motherboard use in the VRM sections typically start at a minimum of 1000/6.3v and go as high as 4700/6.3.

                      Other than that, there's no easy way to tell the difference except by referencing the series (from the information printed on the can) in the manufacturers catalogues. It just happens that the Nichicon HD is a very widely used series, having been used in Intel motherboards for a long time, and is thus easy to recognize. It comes in an older version with a black plastic sleeve and white lettering on the side, and a newer lacquer on bare-metal version with black lettering on top.

                        I don't think age is a determining factor on the sleeve/coating. I have on hand samples of 560uF, 50V HDs that have a black plastic sleeve, D/C = H0644. IOW, manufactured in early November of 2006.

                          PeteS: You're correct - I should have stated that the lacquered HD was introduced later, but both types continue to be manufactured and sold today.

                            The thing I'm wondering about is whether the coating reduces the cap's ability to dissipate heat as compared to the standard sleeving (BTW, with RoHS, sleeving was changed from PVC to polyester).
