Hi everyone. Awhile back we had a problem with some newer dells that had bad caps and we were lucky enough to qualify for a new motherboard/processor from dell under their return program (out of warranty but they still took it).
I just got in a bunch of Gateway E4100 with Intel 865glc motherboards. (Donated to us, we are a non-profit organization who tries to keep our computer costs minimal by using donated equipment)
The moment I installed windows I knew something was wrong because of random freezes and blue screens. I opened up the case, sure enough the caps are oozing on all the computers we got in.
I called Gateway, they said they have no record of any recall and to call Intel. I called Intel, they said Gateway is the only way to get a return since the computer was made by them. I saw the reference to this link on another post http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/rese...tes/193414.htm
but Intel said it wasn't their responsibility. (I realize I could have had a rep who was just trying to get me off the phone so I will give it another try)
Am I basically up the creek here? Will we have to scrap these donated machines for parts, or shell out the repair money/new motherboard money? I would hate to do that because these are such newer machines (P4, 512mb ram) and would greatly help our organization. We might have a chance to get more of these but we do not know if that will be worth it if there is nothing we can do about the failing caps.
Thank you for any advice on this situation!
Jon
