    Toasted Nichicons on Intel D865GLC

Here are some pics of a board I need to fix this week. The caps are Nichicon HN, 820uf 6.3v 8mm. Were these the over filled ones? This board was out of an arcade game, but was well cooled.

Another identical board I looked at had different caps that looked like polymers. I just hope I don't end up recapping a ton of these. The board cage for these games costs $1,400 each...

I already left work for the day- the game is a Silver Strike Bowling from Incredible Technologies. They use this system on a few games. I think Golden Tee Live is another one. It is called the Nighthawk system if I recall.

The cool part is they use their own version of Linux as the OS. I've seen both Geforce FX and ATI R200 video cards in these, and they use an 80GB Hitachi SATA hard drive. Only thing I really hate, is they made a custom BIOS for it that has almost no options- I can't even boot the machine from a normal CD to run MemTest86 or HDAT2.

The power supply was also toasted, it was an APS full of Fujyyu caps.

The game originally came in for having hard drive problems, now I'm wondering if the caps were causing the trouble. We discovered the toasted caps when opening the cage to change the drive.

Most of the newer games I've seen are Linux PC based hardware. I wish I had the ability to make my own custom Linux kernels and systems.

The newer countertop touchscreen games are also Linux based, both the Merit Megatouch series and the Canadian JVL games. In fact the JVL is a cool custom made Single Board Computer with a 512MB Compact Flash card for the hard drive. And it has Rubycon caps.

I've tried using a CF card with an IDE adapter on some other machines, but it's really hit and miss whether it works or not. Plus it's pretty slow depending on what speed the card is.

Do you know what type ram and max amount fits in the "Custom JVL" motherboard?
            Thanks Chris
