    M2A-VM HDMI bad caps

    I got this motherboard for $2 (along with the $15 AMD X2 3500+ CPU). Previous owner said that it boots but freezes at the memory check. To my discovery there were bad caps... bad KZG nippon chemicon caps to be precise... all over the memory section of the board (not surprised here).
    Now... I haven't recapped boards in a long, long time... but I heard that solder is different now to what it was 5 years ago when I was still a kid and soldered boards for a living. It says RoHS on the board and I think this means trouble right? My ordinary Weller WTCPT solder iron isn't compatible or hot enough for RoHS is it?
    If I need a new iron, I'm scrapping the board!

      Add some 60/40 solder to the existing joints for better thermal transfer and I think you should be okay. If you have flux, that would help clean the joints too.

      My "sort by lowest price" ebay 40W made iron was able to recap 2 socket 775 boards (RoHS) with no problem.

          60 watts. should be fine

          wet the solder tips with 60/40 and some flux, then proceed to remove them by walking them out

              Yup, thanks for the help guys. I manage to desolder all of the 820uf 6.3v KZG caps which were swollen (and also the un-swollen ones too) and managed to find a bunch of 820uf 6.3V Panasonic FJ caps at the bottom of my cap collection. I must have desoldered them from another board a few years ago... but anyway, they are all on now and it's good to go. For a $2 motherboard, I can't say more!

                  Hello.
                  I have a soldering station, 862D+, and every time the hot air gun is on, even if it is just cooling off, the soldering iron controller stops controlling. Let me explain what has happened so far, as it took a while to get to this.
                  First, the switch that turns on the hot air gun started to fail, the light came on, but temp never rose, I would have to switch it multiple time to get the gun to start heating, this was due to the contact inside being carbonized.                   First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

                  I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

                  I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

                  Hello!

                  I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

                  The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.
