    MSI MS-6163 Pro Ver2

MSI MS-6163 Pro Ver2 Slot 1 BX Chipset

My parents comp just shut down one day with that funny smell. At the time I was not aware of the capacitor problem and have been using the board for solder practice since. If i had known it could be repaired I would have been more careful. Therefore cant show a pic of this abused board.

3 capacitors showed bulging and leaking next to the power connector.

All capacitors on this board Chhsi and the ones with visible bulging:

    1500mf/10v
    1000mf/10v
    1000mf/6.3v

Since then have had one navtex antenna (active marine antenna) with capacitor failure. The technician was way cool though (From Marel Electronics Greece), brought it back the next day and said as soon as he opened the casing he could smell the capacitor failure, replaced all capacitors and returned it in good order. Many others would have just said we had to replace the antenna. Gotta love the enthusiasts.

Also have another MSI MS-6337 815e fcpga with bulging capacitors. the pc was my work comp and acting possessed. When i was checking it for a reinstall saw the sad news. Replaced it with a CUSL2 :P from Ebay before permanent damage so that is a candidate for cap replacement. Will post some pics soon.

Back to the MS-6163 pro though. At the time in Greece that board was in good availability and very stable so i bought several for the office  . Have many soyo boards also. So i guess i will have more problems soon. A pity though because those boards were stable for years and a PII 300 is still fine for general office stuff : word/excel/email. Have another MS-6163 pro acting possessed but only visible signs are bulging in a a cap near the first dimm slot, is a 1000/6.3v. Kinda sucks when the budget gets eaten up in maintaining the old stuff instead of improving the infrastructure and getting cool stuff that increases productivity and lessens my workload.

The capacitor problem has changed my choice of components though, started buying only intel boards for the office which seem to have caps from good manufacturers. Also trust asus for other components. Funny to check the manufacturers of the caps before i buy huh....

Replacing the MSI with the Asus wasn't a guaranteed alternative... I've seen a few Asus boards with toasted caps, and there's been a few posted in here by others...

With the exception of the bad caps, I always liked MSI boards, very reliable. I have bought some new boards, immediately out of the box I recapped them when I noticed the brand of caps they used... That's sad, but true... They never gave me any trouble, and are in systems to this day.

Sounds like you're gonna have an MSI recapping spree... Let us know the end results...

Well, if these Asus CUSL2 boards failed (i have 3) it would seriously sour my high reputation of rubycon which are used throughout the board
      (gotta love them K's)

i am not really ready for this kinda work though, gotta get a nice solder station and capacitance meter - any ideas?

If it's packed with Rubycon's, I'm sure it's safe of capacitor failure... The common Asus boards I have seen fail were the earlier revision P2B-DS and a few CUV4X-D / DLS. They had some noname garbage caps...

Sometime in that period they went to Rubycon, I actually have an Asus P2B-DS revision 1.06 with Rubycon caps with those lovely K vents...

Recommended to get some 0.8cm width caps to use around the CPU slot otherwise using 1.0cm width will... AAH-HEM...look like this..... :o

anyway it works fine so that is what counts. Will try harder next time.
