PcChips M825G Socket A Motherboard Caps and MOSFET

    PcChips Athlon Socket A M825G Motherboard FSB 100, 133, 166
    EC7, EC5, EC1: OST 1500uf 16v all in parallel
    EC2, EC6, EC11, EC15: OST 3300uf 6.3v all in parallel
    D3, D23, D24, D2: JS B55QS03 TO-262 common cathode Double Diode
    Q2, Q3: Nikos Niko-Sem P50N03LDG N-MOSFET
U3: Fairchild KA7500C dual PWM controller
    Q50, Q11: W2F
    Q49, Q10: W1P

Phantom shorts: all dual diodes measure 7.0 ohms.

EC7, EC5, EC1, EC2, EC6 all bulged. New ones of those and the board would not start. The power supply shuts down as if there's a short. Board starts if Vcore power source CPUPW1 is disconnected. All pins in CPUPW1 measure as shorted so 12v is shorted to ground. I removed the CPU and tested the semiconductors. Almost all shorts among the 4 double diodes and MOSFETS except for Q3. Q3-gate was not shorted. All pins of Q2 were shorted.

Many MOSFETS have phantom shorts, shorts from the design or failure of surrounding circuitry and not itself. The differences between MOSFETS in the same position in different phases often give hints to which ones have failed without having to pull them to test for phantom shorts. Both Q2 and Q3 for this two phase FET-DIODE buck converter are in the same position and Q3 measures better than Q2. MOSFETS where all pins appear to be shorted also give away a bad one because no design allows all 3 pins to appear shorted. Q2 has all pins shorted.

Two strikes against Q2 so I pull it. It is shorted on all 3 pins. CPUPW1 is no longer shorted and other shorts have disappeared. I put in another one and the board shuts down after about 5 seconds. A voltage test shows that Q2-gate and Q3-gate are receiving the signal from the KA7500C through Q50, Q11, Q49, Q10. A voltage test on the source and drain show that the board is receiving 12v and producing Vcore properly.

Turns out I had subbed in a test CPU that didn't work because I hadn't changed the FSB to match. I removed the test CPU and put the original CPU back in and the board works. The original CPU and memory were undamaged.

All fixed with new caps and 1 MOSFET.

    Alienware M18x Shorted CPU Mosfet
    by chestercc
I've got an old Alienware M18x R1 which shorted out the charger whenever it was connected. Tracked down the short to two shorted caps and burned CPU power controller caused by a shorted mosfet on the CPU's graphic power supply.

I've replaced the faulty mosfet, two shorted caps and the CPU Power controller (NCP6151S52MNR2G).

Issue is now whilst there is no short if I attempt to power the system on the fans spin for a couple seconds there are no lights and no further action - the PCH is heating up but there is no CPU power coming out but there is an enable signal...

iMac 2017 PSU - shorted PFC mosfet
    by mat2k
I am trying to fix an iMac 2017 PSU, initially came with a blown fuse and shorted PFC MOSFET (6R199P). After visual inspection and some measurements I replaced the FET with a P20NM60 and tested with 100w series lamp, and it lasted 1 second before going into dead short. The PFC controller chip (NCP1605BG) and its passives appear fine (passives measure OK), but I do not know if there is a simple way of testing the NCP1605 as I wouldn't like to blind-replace it.
There was some slight blackening of the solder on the PFC controller passives so I reflowed them all with some flux. I am waiting...

MSI GTX-980ti shorted MOSFET on memory rail
    by daemon123
    Hi All,
I have this MSI GTX-980ti Gaming Golden Edition. It had shorted mosfet on memory. Replaced the shorted i.e. Q47 PK616BA with 4C09N and the card ran fine for a month. Then suddenly again the same problem. This time when i replace it 4C09N or with replacement PK616BA (Aliexpress) it gets shorted. As soon as turn on the PC the PSU shuts down and the same mosfet Q47 gets short.
What should be the next step. Kindly guide.

How do you test MOSFET in laptops ?
    by Jane
I tried to use this method:

    Testing an N-channel MOSFET:

Step 1: Discharge the Gate (turn off the MOSFET)
Place the black probe (COM) on the Source (S) and the red probe on the Drain (D). The multimeter should show no continuity (high resistance or "OL" – open line).
Then, touch the black probe to the Source (S) and the red probe to the Gate (G). This discharges any stored charge in the Gate, turning the MOSFET off.

Step 2: Charge the Gate (turn on the MOSFET)
Now, place the red probe on the Gate (G) and the black probe on the

Dell Inspiron 15 7567 (LA-D993P) - No power after replacing blown inductor and shorted mosfet advice needed
    by Reintar
First of all, I'd like to mention that I'm a novice when it comes to laptop repair, although I do have some experience with soldering.
One day, my laptop experienced a severe stutter, and after rebooting, it failed to boot into Windows. I decided to disassemble it and found that the PL900 component was blown. Later, I came across a post (https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...error%E2%80%99) with the same problem, where...
