    Asus VW192S revived, but backlights on then off

    Hi again.
    This time I got a monitor out of the recycle bin. It struck me that it had speakers. Sounds useful.

    SUMMARY
    =======
    Monitor is an Asus VW192S, 19" LCD screen 1440x900, model of 2007.
    Initially, the monitor had been completely dead.

    THINGS TESTED
    ==========
    1) On the power board, at first, I checked the main fuse, which was indeed blown. As soon as I replaced it, it got blown again rather violently.

    2) Then, I de-soldered transistor Q101, an N-channel MOSFET switching regulator (Toshiba 2SK3562 7:J), which tested fine.

    3) Before turning to the PWM controller (DAP02AL SZ), I checked the bridge rectifier (809A 2KBP08M 3N258). As it turned out, it was shorted on two opposite diodes on the rhombus diagram, that is (-) to AC, and other AC to (+).

    After replacing it, the screen now powers on normally, through on/off button and power led turns blue.
    I've measured the psu lines:
    12v giving 14.5v load-less and 13v on load,
    5.2v line gives 5.2v no load and 5.5v! on load.
    The ON/OFF pin outputs 0v (LCD off) and 2.8v (LCD on).
    The pin designated BRIG (brightness?) outputs a steady 0.22v.
    It seems to sense the input signal and turn on or sleep, accordingly.

    PROBLEM
    ======
    BUT, CCFL back-lights light up for a couple of seconds and then off for 1s, then again on for just a couple of secs. Then no back-lights and the power led turns to orange.
    I cannot discern any vendor startup image, or computer input image, no menu through the menu button. Such a disappointment.

    QUESTION
    =======
    The problem may lay with the logic board. I've even replaced a bulged cap (other capacitors seem fine), next to the LDVS pins, to no avail.
    What could be my next step?

    Same monitor, but different problem here.

    I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

    Anybody willing to help me on this, please ?
    Even a general direction would help, as I'm totally lost.

      Do you have any test bulbs ? if you have an ESR meter I would check all caps if not
      replace all caps.

        recap the psu, and maybe some of the caps next to the regulator on the logic board.

          Unfortunatelly I have no test bulb or ESR meter, just a dmm. I'll try to replace as many caps as I can.
          Which component is the "regulator on the logic board".

            Red dot on logic board is regulator

              Re: Asus VW192S revived, but backlights on then off

              OK, I have managed to recap the inverted part of the PSU (caps 153, 154, 159, 160, 203, 204) and also changed the 2 caps next to the voltage regulator on the logic board (c30, c31).
              The same few sec to black problem still remains, however, I've noticed a larger period of backlights ON state, 4 sec vs 2 sec previously, before shutting down.
              I've also test logic board regulator (in circuit) for shorts and its resistances seem normal.

              I've tested the inverter transformer (T201) for open windings (in circuit) and the resistances of the windings are the expected ones.

              Lacking a spare CCFL, I've hacked a recycled Philips 11w Genie bulb for inverter lamp testing, as in here.
              Alternatively connecting the bulp to each of the high voltage connectors, in place of corresponding CCFL, the CFL bulb lights up, but again the inverter shuts down after few secs. So the inverter part is probably working.

              When the backlights are on, the ON/OFF pin (CN101) is high 2.8V. After the 4 secs period it turns to 0V and everything shuts down. As this is the feedback line from the signal board to the Inverter IC sense circuitry, one can guess that something on the logic board signals the Inverter IC to turn off the power of the monitor.

              What should I test next?

              PG. Attached is the psu schematic from a similar monitor.

                Did you change c103?

                  No, no recap on the primary side (i.e. c101, 103, 105).
                  Should I change that as well?

                  Oh, I've also checked the HV transformer driver mosfets Q208 & Q207 for resistance and they showed 1.5 to 2.8 MOhm between pins.
