Acer AL2416W No Signal Until Warm

I have a fairly old Acer AL2416W that is my secondary display in a 2-display setup with a Quadro FX4800 video card. Yesterday I temporarily installed a Quadro K4200 card and realized that the problem lies with the monitor. (A couple of red herrings made me think video card.)

This is NOT the 2-second-off problem. I have had that happen to both of my monitors in the past when they were still under warranty.

The monitor gets enough signal to wake it up, but looses the signal and goes back to sleep until it has warmed up a half hour later.

I almost forgot this part....When the computer is first turned on, the monitor will fire up and display POST. It even stays on while the Windows starburst is showing. But as soon as Windows shows the full-screen startup background, the monitor shuts back down as described below.

When the computer is first turned on, the Acer logo will display, but then "No Signal" is displayed. (The screen never goes blank.) The monitor then goes to standby as expected. About 1/2-second later, the monitor wakes up again, displays the logo, displays the "no signal", and returns to standby. This will continue for about 1/2-hour until the monitor warms up, and then it works fine for the rest of the day.

I haven't popped the cover yet because I'm still using it every day for business. I first wanted to find out if anyone had any ideas on where I should begin looking. I'm hoping it is something visually obvious, like a cold solder joint or bulging caps.

cracked solder joint or a small cap gone dry - probably not bulged or leaking btw.

you can narrow it down by heating different area's with a hairdryer or similar.

Tonight the monitor flickered off for a second. I suspect it is going to fail very soon. So I got around to opening the cover.

Even after 15 minutes the power supply is still so hot that I can't touch it. So it seems fairly obvious that it's the power supply that is failing. Nothing else appears out of the ordinary.

There is a heat sink plate glued down over most of the board, so it's not worth trying to even service any parts. They're kind of rare, but it looks like I can get one out of Canada for $50, unless anyone knows of someone parting out an AL2416W?

But considering its age, it may not be worth throwing even $50 into it.

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
        by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

How to force Acer Aspire Series to bootup BIOS/UEFI on external Monitor?
        by maralexbar
I ask this question in general as there are many Acer Aspire models with UEFI Insyde BIOS that do not boot to the BIOS on an external monitor (VGA, HDMI, etc) showing only the Internal LCD (LVDS, eDP etc).
It's a pain to work on Acer notebooks with a broken screen and not being able to access the BIOS using an external monitor.

If anyone knows how to force the external monitor as primary for Notebooks of those models
