Samsung SyncMaster 226 slow to start?

My trusty monitor recently developed a nasty habit of the display flashing rapidly when first powered up, and keeps flashing for several minutes before stabilizing.
The display (computer boot screen) is there, just rapidly blinking on-off. No sounds or noises.
It will give you a headache watching it.

I am using a Dell Latitude in a docking station.
When I just work on the lap top there is no problem, so I know it is the monitor.

This began a couple of months ago, and seems to be getting worse. I just turn it on and leave the room for a while before returning to finish the boot process.

One more tid-bit....for a few years now the display will randomly "flash" once, like disappear and come back immediately. Doesn't happen very often, maybe a few times a day (I may be on the computer 8+ hours at a time).

I am sure that is related and had taken it as a sign of impending doom when it began, but the monitor has continued to work for quite some time, and the display (when stable) is crystal clear and normal.

For the last couple of weeks I have just left the system running 24 hours a day so I won't have to wait to start every morning. Still chugging along. But I would rather power down at night.

Haven't opened it up yet....now that I have found this most excellent forum I thought I would see if any of you have recommendations of what to look for or at when I do?
Wonder what this thingy on the circuit board does??

Almost certainly bad caps on the secondary of the power board. Saw this in the exact same monitor, the caps that went bad were CapXon. Yours probably uses them as well, so open it up and post some pictures.

Okay. If it's bad caps, it's an easy fix!

2 caps with swollen tops, 820 uf 25 v, located in the bottom right corner of that previous photo........everything else looks good. They haven't blown yet, but are on the way. Hence the symptoms that clear up after things warm up.?

Off to Ack Radio for replacements. Thanks to the originators of this forum for giving me enough info to overcome my insecurities and dive back into circuit boards after 40 years.

"Off to Ack Radio for replacements." NOO!
RadioShack sells crappy capacitors too. Buy some good ones from here.
You should also replace the rest of the lower voltage capacitors. There are 3 others on that board that should be replaced

Re: Samsung SyncMaster 226 slow to start?

Ack Radio in Atlanta Ga (with a location in Birmingham AL) is THE supplier of circuit board components in the North Georgia area. They aren't a Radio Shack....all the TV or electronic repair shops and amateur radio operators around here have been using them for decades.

                I'll take my chances locally.

Thanks for the suggestion to replace them all. This monitor has been in constant service for about 7 years now, and just started acting up. I've been quite pleased with the performance.

Just make sure to get low ESR caps, with dimensions that will fit

Nichicon caps.....my supply store was out of 840 uf 25v, so I used 1000 uf 25v (within 20%)...she's starts right up now, screen clear as can be. !!

Adding more capacitance for filtering is just fine. Good work!
