Samsung SyncMaster 931BW will not power on.

Hi I'm new to the forum as my LCD monitor appears to have given up the ghost today.

I remember months ago when I took out the DVI adaptor the monitor would make a high pitched squealing noise.
I never heard this sound before.
    Sounded like a cap squeal.
So today when I came back from EB after buying DiRT 3 I find my monitor now doesn't go.

I stripped the monitor apart and found a cap has bulged.
I have attached an image with the one cap which has bulged.
    It's a CapXor 1000uf 10v radial.

I decided to plug in the power again while the board was out of the monitor.
All I can hear is it powering up with a faint high pitched squeal then cutting out over and over again.
Can't find any fuses anywhere on the board so guess I have located the problem.

Is it hard to come across these capacitors in the local electronics stores?

    Thanks.

Please don't post pictures inline. They seriously inconvenience those with slow connections and annoy the rest of us. Use 'Manage Attachments', below the text entry area instead.

By the symptoms there is another capacitor causing the problem. The one you pointed out is also definitely bad. The recommendation is to replace ALL electrolytic capacitors with the exception of the large (roughly 100uF, 450 volt) one, which rarely fails.

Your chances of finding a replacement cap at a local store is very slim. This application requires low ESR capacitors.

If you live in the USA I recommend buying Panasonic FR, FM, or FC series caps from Digikey. By choosing USPS First Class Mail as the shipping option the cost for a complete set of caps and shipping will be about $10. Order today and expect them delivered on Friday.

My apologies for attaching the attachment as an img within the post.

I work at a computer store but never dabbled with monitors on this level before besides replacing inverters on laptops with back light issues.

I live in New Zealand and I think we have a place which sells them called Jaycar

Could you check this link to see if I am looking at the right type of capacitor?
The store is about an hour from where I live so it's possible to get them tomorrow.

      Thanks.

Those are general purpose caps. These are low ESR. Note the higher ripple current, and the ESR spec on the details page. Samxon aren't the best caps, but they are certainly better than the originals.

          Thanks Bill.

          I have fixed my monitor.
Turns out it was only the Green 1000uf 16v capcitor.
Took the monitor to work and had a look around the back on the deceased LCD monitors and motherboards.

Found a motherboard which appeared to have the correct capacitors I needed.
So I took out the green 1000uf 16v capacitor from the monitor an replaced it with the one I took off the motherboard.

My monitor is now working but.....

          What I thought was a 1000uf 16v turned out to be a 1200uf 16v L ESR.
The cap was a little taller and brown otherwise the same radius.
It was off an old ASUS P4S800-MX motherboard.

Yet the monitor is working fine.

            I had the same problem.

Today I have replaced the green capacitor.

            Now my monitor working fine.
There was no 16v cap, so I used 25v capacitor.

This is a pretty old thread -they may not see your query.
Try replacing the cap and any others of the same make/series
and let us know how it goes

yup, LED was blinking (it means what monitor was working a bit)...but capacitor is bad...so, just changed it and now it works capacitor is 16V and 1000uf

Re: Samsung SyncMaster 931BW will not power on.

                      Hey guys,

I'm so glad I found this topic here.

I have the same issue like everyone here. The monitor "trys" to start, the blue led is blinking and you can here this high frequency sound starting over and over again, but nothing ever shows up...

I'm no expert and I don't know which capacitor it might be, so could some of you take a look at the pictures and point out which capacitor probably is broken?

                      Thanks

replace all caps in psu excluding the big black one at 400v
