ACER AL1916 blinking green light of death

I have an Acer AL1916 monitor. It goes blank and the light above the power button blinks green. This happens when the computer is off for an extended period of time and it takes some time for it to right itself. I am reading other posts about this problem and wonder if its a waste of time for me to even fix it.

I have an IT background and took electronics in high though I am rusty. Any ideas on what I need to get this thing working and how long should I let it discharge? Thanks

    1) Most LCDs have a bleeder resistor that will discharge the largest filter capacitor in about 1 to 2 minutes when the power is removed and unplugged.

    2) You will have to take apart the lcd and post clear focused pictures of the boards using the manage attachments function. Please do not post pictures inline.

    3) The symptoms sound like potentially bad capacitors. To replace the capacitors, you will need a soldering iron, solder, desolder pump or solder wick. Caps will cost around $10 if you are in the USA. Time to take apart, solder, fix, etc will be about 20 to 60 minutes.

edit: Feeling of fixing it yourself: priceless

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

I'll buy a new monitor anyway, and try to fix the one that is malfunctioning. If I succeed Ill use the old one as a spare. I try to have as many spares as I can. I have a spare motherboard, and cpu lol. Thanks for the reply.

Eventhough there's a bleeder resistor to drain the large cap, as a point of safety, I normally put my meter across the large cap to verify it's drained. I've had a few occasions where the cap was still fully charged.

Good plan. I picked up a Mac G5 power supply that had been unplugged for 10 minutes. Bzzzzt! Launched it across the room. I'm more careful now.
