    Samsung T240 Intermittent Shut-Off

    Hey Guys,

So I have two Samsung T240s with consecutive serials purchased together.

One of them has developed an intermittent shut-off problem. I can use it for hours and it will stay on, then suddenly it will shut off (power light is off). I touch the power button and it turns back on, then turns back off again, usually within 10-30 seconds. I can do this several times, and finally it stays back on and keeps working for an hour or two or five again, and then starts doing this again. Sometimes (though rarely), it will flicker off and back on, as if someone unplugged and replugged the power cord really fast (we're talking 100ms here).

I opened it up and checked all the connections, sprayed with contact cleaner, and it still does it. I am stumped. Could it be that it has a bad touch sensor board that tells the monitor the power button was pressed when it really hasn't been?

The second T240 that's been sitting next to it its whole life and which has the same exact number of hours on it does NOT have this problem.

Any and all suggestions are very much appreciated - I'm at wit's end! These have already been replaced by Samsung for the same problem 2 years ago (they were originally purchased in 2008). If I can't fix this, I am going with Dell again, as their monitors have never ever failed me (have 3 2001FP panels that are 7-8 years old and going strong, not even backlight discoloration...).

    Thanks!

Sounds like bad caps. Open it up and post some good focused photos of the power and logic boards. Don't post them inline, use the manage attachments button.

      Board pictures:

      Power Board (Front)

      Power Board (Back)

      Video Board (Front)

There's nothing on the back of the video board except solder points for the video connector pins, so I didn't include that. Boards show no discoloration anywhere, and as far as I can see, there are no bulging caps... take a look yourselves!

I should have mentioned that many members will not go to offsite websites to look at photos for fear getting a computer virus. If you can please post your photos using the tools on this site, it would be most appreciated.

They are just straight JPEG files, I don't see how you can possibly get a virus from that. The site (www.sergep.com) is my personal Web site. Also, at 5.1MB each, they were rejected by the attachment applet. and I didn't want to degrade the resolution by resizing them.

Anyways, I am attaching smaller versions to this post - use the links above to see the full-resolution originals. Thanks again!

Since your monitor works until it gets hot, I would try re soldering the coil that is marked ST-35 and things around it, and see what happens. I see a couple that look like they need attention.
It's hard to make things out on the bottom side of the board because of the glare from the flash.
Whatever I do, I consider it a success, if in the end I am breathing, seeing, feeling and hearing!

              Nice job on the photos.

              1) In addition to what alexanna suggested, try touching up the solder joints for the two yellow transformers T303 and T304 (located lower left and right) and the large inverter transformer T301.

              2) What brand are the capacitors?

              3) Once you perform step 1, try accelerating the shutdown process by turning on the monitor and taking your hair dryer and heating up various parts of the power board, especially the caps.

              4) If you get no shutdown, try heating the logic board.

Samwha XC (the light blue ones ; no datasheet available for those (that i know of).. and they're ONLY used in samsung monitors and TVs) plus lots of Sam Young crap everywhere else

                the usual crap from samsung

                  Re: Samsung T240 Intermittent Shut-Off

T301 is the primary suspect. I bought multiple boards and all had T301 bad. No other components including the low quality Samwha were bad. If the suspect transformer buzzes or smells of ozone and the good one doesn't then that is likely the problem. Don't get your nose too close or you'll get burned.

Swap the power boards to see if the problem moves to the good monitor. If that works as expected then swap the transformers to see if the problem follows the suspect transformer. Mark the suspect monitor, board, and transformer with a sharpie so you know where they are.

Hey guys - thanks for all the suggestions. I will open the monitor tonight and give it a whirl with a heat gun - it does turn off more often when the room gets really hot, so thermal component failure seems likely. I'll also swap the power boards and see if the problem follows. I'll keep you updated.

Question though - is T301 really going to cause the ENTIRE monitor to turn off? It's not that the panel goes dark but the power light stays on - the whole monitor turns off and I have to turn it back on with the power button, after which it shuts off again after either a few minutes or a few hours.

                      Hello Everyone,

I think my power board was fried by the T301. There is nothing but a small fried hole at one end of the T301 above the logo and in below C304 and C306. The fried end of T301 is touching nothing and burnt. If you look at the first picture of the powerboard in Siraltus' pic, it is located on the bottom middle area. Is this board fried or can I still use it? Pics to follow... Sorry, I am a noob . If not, does anyone know how much another power board costs and where I can get one? Thank you.

                        Re: Samsung T240 Intermittent Shut-Off

So it turns out the touch sensor (power button) was bad. When it heated up, the chip would randomly turn the monitor off. Heating the chip with a heat gun would result in immediate malfunction, while cooling it down with an upside-down compressed air can restored normal operation instantly. Got another touch sensor assembly from Samsung for $15 and all is well!

Does anyone know a productcode or something of that Touch sensor assembly?

I'm having the same issue, but Samsung just said they don't sell parts over here

The part is called the P-FUNCTION BOARD ASSY and the Samsung Part No. is BN96-07890B.
