Samsung 240T: Backlight starts to flicker

    Hi there,

I have a Samsung 240T which I bought back in June 2002. When powering up the monitor the backlight comes on, flickers for about 10 seconds and then finally stabilizes. I assume that the inverter pcb will soon die. Umpf. Unfortunately I don´t have any service manual for this monitor. So, which caps of the inverter pcb should I look for and exchange to get the problem fixed?

Thanks a mil in advance for your kind help,
    Achim

P.S.: I am from Europe. So, I hope you won´t mind my non-perfect English.

    1) Post clear focused pictures after reading

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1868

    2) Please do not post pictures inline as they slow down the loading of pages.

    3) For best picture quality and clarity take your boards to a window on a sunny day, turn flash off, and use macro mode. Take a top down view of all your boards (front and back). Make sure the photo is legible so that we can read the PCB printing clearly. A shutter speed of 1/125 or faster will produce nice clear focused pictures. Try to get a photo that is 2000x2000 resolution or as close as possible.

    4) Here is an example of the pictures we want.

Re: Samsung 240T: Backlight starts to flicker

@retiredcaps: First, thanks for your advice regarding taking photos. I have to admit that I did not yet open up the case of the affected monitor. Unfortunately, I even would have to organize a new digicam, since my old cam from 1999 would definitely not be able to take sufficiently clear and crisp macro photos of the pcb´s in acceptable quality and resolution.

Well, I thought that anyone here might already have had such a '10-sec-backlight-flickering-problem' with his or her Samsung 240T monitor when turning it on. It is a true 1920x1200 resolution monitor which cost me 5.500,-- Euros back in 2002. So, I think it´s definitely worth a try fixing it.

By the way, I managed to get a hold of a used SK2000H inverter board out of an old (but working!) 240T. Do you think simply swapping it against mine is a risk in terms of possible voltage incompatibilities due to differing pcb versions?

Again, thanks a mil for your advice,
      Achim.

Start with photos using your old camera first before swapping boards. We have seen really good photos and really crappy photos. If yours are somewhere in between, we can work with them.

          hmm.. i've got a 210T (21.3" 1600x1200 version of the 240T)..
it should be mostly similar on the inside, especially since the service manual is for both of them.
still trying to get a used 240T by the way.. pretty hard to come by these days, but definitely worth it because of the PVA panel. i just can't stand the crappy TN panels. they're like a plague.. almost every new monitor has them

anyways.. to make this post semi-productive.. here's the combined 210T/240T service manual

edit: can't upload it. upload failed.
gonna try something else and edit it in here..

          edit: here you go.
Servicemanual for the 210T and 240T plus a bunch of service bulletins
          http://homeboy87.funpic.de/badcaps/S...240T_SM+SB.rar

another edit: when you reassemble it, make sure you put the right screws in for the stand! i've seen a 240T where someone used the wrong screws (too long).. they pushed against the back of the panel from the inside and cracked it

You'd be surprised. With decent lighting you can get good photos from any real (non cellphone) digital camera.

One day I'm going to take 2 photos of a board. One with my DSLR and $1000.00 lens, and one with my old 1999 point and shoot digicam.
I'd bet that at web-size most here couldn't pick which was which.

depends on the phone really. if it has a camera with autofocus (ie: non-fixed) the photos can end up pretty good.
i've used the Sony Ericsson K750/W800 and my main phone (W810) for countless photos on here.

the modified camera driver available for these phones also helps a lot, as it allows you to manually set the focus to whatever you want..

oh and btw.. you forgot the ] at the beginning of the quote (after "[QUOTE=Achim;152492")

@Scenic: Thanks a lot for the service manual! I will take a deeper look into it before I start to open up the case of my 240T.

@all: I not yet dared to open up my case, but as soon as I will do so, I will take pictures of the suspicious parts of the pcb´s, of course. I don´t know whether I will already have time for it on upcoming weekend. But I will definitely keep you informed.

Thanks again for all your kind help so far,
                Achim

Re: Samsung 240T: Backlight starts to flicker

mine had samwha and sam young caps. none of them visibly bad yet.
as i was refurbishing it, i've replaced them all.

hell.. i even went through the trouble replacing every single SMD lytic on the mainboard.
only problem still left on mine are whining inverter transformers.. dunno how to stop that effectively.
it wouldn't be too much of a problem really, as it's not too loud.
problem is: those 8 (or 6?) transformers all whine in different frequencies..

PS: the power brick on mine killed itself. Infineon 20N60C3 got hot enough that the tab of the TO220 package turned dark blue-ish, it left a mark in the aluminium heatsink and the PCB underneath it is now coal lol
been running that monitor off 12V (instead of 14) from my PC PSU since then.

Forgot to mention that I bought an used Nikon S200 for $20 off my local kijiji last year. Nice camera with macro mode. So you don't have to spend a lot if you want an used camera.
