Hello-
My faithful Samsung 205T failed a few months ago, and was awaiting me to have the courage to chuck it. It'd turn on, flash the display on for a second, the power light would flicker, then shut off. From past experience, if it was a backlight issue, the LCD would still work (with a flashlight) and power wouldn't be affected. But with this, even the power status light was flickering.
Then while dealing with a friend's faulty motherboard, I learned of bad electrolytic caps, and thought to take the back off my display before throwing it out. Sure enough, I see two Samxon GF caps that are bulged. Given my symptoms, I think it's a pretty good bet that's the culprit.
There are only two bulged caps (820 uF 25v - Samxon), but 4 other caps on the board from CapXon that look fine - should I replace the rest anyway? I might as well, they're so cheap and the board is so easy to work on. Is there a good brand to go with? For these caps, DigiKey lists: Panasonic ECG, United Chemi-Con, Cornell Dubilier Electronics (CDE), and Nichicon.
There is a huge 180uF @ 450v cap that's a Samxon GF series, but appears to NOT be bulged. Should I replace this one anyway? I ask because it's about $8 at DigiKey, and I don't want to waste money if not necessary. And if I do replace it, what's a good brand? DigiKey lists: Panasonic ECG, United Chemi-Con, Cornell Dubilier Electronics (CDE), Nichicon, EPCOS, and Kemet.
The power supply board is single-sided, and very, very easy to work on. I guess I should mention I have a background in electronics and have been regularly soldering for about 20 years, so I'm capable of the extra work.
Thanks!
