NEC LCD1860NX - Problem when left off for some time

    Hi,
My workplace chucked out a NEC LCD1860NX I took it home and plugged it into my desktop and it came on straight away everything seemed fine.

I used the computer for several hours with no problems. I then turned the monitor off with the power button and had my dinner, Then some time later pressed the power switch and the green LED came on and could see the backlight flash on/off but no desktop.

Now if i unplug the d-sub cable and press the power and the exit button it will display a no signal dialogue box (sometimes takes a few goes) Then if the d-sub cable is reconnected the desktop is back and will work for as long as i want.

Now this happens every time turn off and leave for some time,

Bye the way once working if i turn off and on within a few minutes it comes back on no problem.

Also if I use computer power settings to let the monitor sleep same problem, comes out of sleep mode, green LED on, black (blank) screen not even the settings panel will display

This is so annoying as when it is on its perfect any help or ideas to try would be much appreciated.

    hmm, i have no clue

but do check for bad caps inside. look for any that are bulging the tops or leaking brownish crud. also report on brand of capacitors used.

What you are describing sounds like bad caps inside. As caps age, they dry up, and/or lose uF, and/or have high ESR. If I understand this correctly, as the monitor warms up, the ESR (ohms) of the caps drops. This allows the monitor to operate.

As shovenose suggested, open up the monitor and look for bad caps.

If you do see bad caps, replace them all with low ESR caps with something from the following list ...

Thank you for your quick response.

I have opened up the monitor and it does indeed have have some bad caps, three on the power board.

This webpage http://pkrobot.freehostia.com/LCDRepair8.htm shows 2 of the defective caps the other i have is the smaller one next to the aluminum block with fins on.

I should of mentioned that even though i have repaired many computers + laptops including screen replacements, I have never repaired a monitor, also i have never soldered anything in my life so i am probly best to get someone else to do this for me.

Thankyou for giving me the confidance to open it up though as monitors have always scared me a little with there CAUTION to prevent electric shock do not remove enclosure No user serviceable parts inside warnings.

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

              Problem with monitor DS-D5022QE-B
              by Askic
              Hello to all,

I have a problem with monitor that is delivered together with CCTV system.
The monitor appears to be completely dead, there is no LED power diode and it doesn't react to pressed power button.

I have disconnect display and check many components on the power supply part of the board. There is no anything obvious and monitor is about 3 years old. There are no bulged caps. When measuring voltages on the output connector to VGA board I can measure stable 14.5 V on 12V pins and stable 5.07V on 5V pins. So I assumed that this part of the board is OK....

Samsung Syncmaster S23A550H flicker, no input

              Hello all together,

I have been having a problem with my Samsung Syncmaster S23A550H monitor for some time now. It first started with flickering errors when moving the mouse in the left margin (in 10% of the width from the left approximately) and ended with the monitor not recognizing either an HDMI signal, or a DVI signal. Before no more signal was detected, the flickering (horizontal lines across the entire screen) has gotten worse. Since I have the same monitor a second time, I naturally tested the power cord of the other monitor on it. The error remained unchanged. Another...

              Vizio M60-C3 Left Edge problem
              by Pinky Deepak
I have a M60-C3 where the left edge has started showing issues as seen in the picture attached. Along with this, I also noticed some darkening on the left half of the screen which went away after I left the TV unplugged. i initially thought it was the led backlight that was wearing out but looks like something to do w the TCONN board. I searched this forum but couldn't find anyone else seeing this issue. most of them were LH/RH completely gone. any insights or guidance is appreciated.

Here's a video of both the issues: https://youtu.be/hMqc760nB3o
