Genius SW-HF 5000 5.1 audio system master volume potentiometer hack

Good day folks. A friend of mine asked me to have a look at his Genius 5000 5.1 audio system which no longer played sound on the rear and front channels - only the Sub/center channel worked. I took the back panel off and after some testing, I found the TDA amplifier for the front channels had become shorted, causing two fuses in the transformer's secondary to open, which also cut the power for the other TDA for the rear channels. The SUB/center TDAs run off a different winding and thus they were unaffected. I replaced all said components and the system was now working, playing sound on all channels, but the volume control was rather scratchy. By that I mean it would cut out in certain positions of the master volume knob, plus the front-left speaker could not reach full volume for some reason. I took front panel off hoping to be able to clean the master pot. Unfortunately, it's one of those motorized pots, apparently dedicated to this model, because I could not find one in my country for the life of me. I could've just left it alone and warn my buddy about the possible sound cut-outs and leave it as it is, but once again I was too zealous for my own good and took the pot apart anyway. It came apart fairly easily with just a couple of bent metal tabs holding everything in place and all was going smoothly until one of the wiper pins on one of the "stages" broke off.....great. So now I'm stuck with this potentiometer strewn all over my workbench and this horrible feeling that I almost had it working ! Fixing it is out of the question and so is finding a new one, but then it hit me: WHAT IF we hack this thing. Upon closer inspection of the tracks inside the pot, I discovered that each "stage" (there's 3 of them stacked together) has 4 tracks which correspond to the 4 brushes which spin around to make contact (duuh, that's how a pot works). To cut the sh!t short, I was wondering if I could replace the pot with a digital pot and if you guys can recommend a suitable one. Apparently it has to be 50k, since that's the resistance of the tracks in the current one. It'd need 6 pots in total (2 per channel), which I don't think is really possible in the same package, so I might need 3 chips to achieve this....any thoughts ? Cheers.

No good deed goes unpunished - i know that all too well myself...

That being said, there are plenty of digital pot chips available.

It's been a few years since i've looked into them, but the simplest ("dumb", ie. pushbutton-control) ones always reset to minimum, upon power being removed. On the flipside, the persistent ones (non-resetting) only have some form of serial port input, and as such, would need some extra circuitry (a microcontroller or such) to drive them.

Actually those "dumb" ones might be exactly what I need, since I read somewhere that this motorized pot always takes itself down to 0 and THEN starts the amplifiers to ensure it doesn't blast the speakers with maximum volume...whether or not that's true I don't know, but I guess I could try it anyway. Can you give me an example of a digipot off the top of your head ? One you think might do the job :| That being said, while I do have some above-average electronics knowledge, I admit I suck when it comes to digital stuff like controllers and junk, so I might need some help here ...Looking around the internet, I found some pots, so how does this one look for instance ? HERE It's one of those fancy types which requires some sort of data as well, so it's probably ill-advised, since the time, components plus effort required to make such thing work would probably outweigh the price of a functional system. Push-button pots don't seem to have dual-pot versions...

Done a bit of research and found this - check out the list at the bottom of the page, it lists some interesting ICs which I believe fit the bill pretty nicely, provided they're not terribly expensive of course. I'd personally put my money on the MAX5486...sounds like a good all-in-one solution, though of course I'd need 3 of them and getting them to work with the remote control is going to be a whole different story, but for now I want to at least get the thing up and running.

The button-controlled volatile pots from Maxim seem to be the MAX5486, MAX5456, MAX5457 and DS1802.

            Volume potentiometer loudness tap bypass?
            by Xenon-Codex
I salvaged a Sony TA-F170 with broken volume potentiometer. It has a special pot with a loudness tap in the middle, of course not available anymore.
Is the loudness somehow possible to get to work, at least constant instead of variable? I have a regular potentiometer which works, but the loudness does not.

Vizio D65x-G4 Volume changes on its own
            by karthur
On this Vizio D65x, the volume will change on its own. I don't mean like during commercials where the volume will increase. I mean its like the (+) volume button on the remote is pressed and the actual volume dialog is displayed on the screen going up. It will do this, then the volume may start going down. It might go all the way to "0"or it might stop at a different number, then start going back up. The whole time its doing this, the volume dialog is shown on the screen.

It wont do it until it has been "ON" for 20 or 30 minutes, so it does seem to be heat related....

Sony HCD-HX80R Amplifier Volume Control Problem
            by crackedprint
I have a strange fault on a Sony amplifier. The volume control varies the display from MIN, then 1 up to 30 and then MAX as expected. At MIN there is no sound. However, at 1 it is quite loud and increasing above 1 does not change the sound level.

I have tried a Cold Reset as per the service manual.

I have looked at the I2C clock and data to volume control chip IC501 (BD3499FV). Data is only sent to IC501 when the volume is set to MIN or 1. At any other setting no data is sent to IC501.

I have looked all the way through the service manual and tried many online...

Marantz SR5007 popping on volume change and mute in Direct Mode
            by BigOof
            Hi,

I bought a used Marantz SR5007 and it's giving me some issues that I can't seem to really place. It functions well in most settings, ARC mostly works, it has no issues driving my speakers in any of the digital input modes, but I'm having issues running analog inputs in direct or pure direct mode. For some reason in this mode there's distortion for every volume increment I give it, but once the volume is stable it has no issues. Muting creates a loud pop, switching to another source also causes a pop and so does turning off the amp in that mode. Again, no issue in the digital modes....

Samsung Soundbar Q900T Cuts Off if Volume above 30
            by Storyteller12
I have this soundbar and when I turn it on it works until I turn the volume above 30.
Then the display show “PROT” protection and shuts off.

I can turn it right back on and it works until volume hits 30 again.

There is a little static on the surround speakers so I unplugged them but still have same problem. I tried unplugging all speakers also and when volume goes above 30 it shuts off.

I can turn the volume above 30 if nothing is playing but as soon as I play something it shuts off.

It will play fine for hours with volume...
