a good tip, your soldering iron tip is connected to ground, cut the wire in the handle or base and put a 1meg resistor inline.

that will disipate static but not pass enough current for a fireworks display if you solder something that is still powered.

Yup, I already harvested a slightly larger one from a cable TV box MB. It's working great. The old one burned out while I was troubleshooting the video output, so no worries with this one burning up. I did learn my soldering iron tip isn't isolated though! Lol

    throw some dice?
you cant - if you can meter inductance then read the good ones.
or just find one the same size on some junk - it's probably not critical get be exact.

Can anyone identify fuses FB2 and FB4 and what I can replace them with (besides a solder bridge lol)? These things are ridiculously small, no markings, and FB2 is open.

    Thanks! That's what I figured, especially since this thing draws so little (1,100mA @3.3V; 1,250mA @ 5V, and 550mA @ 12V). Start-up is a whole 51 Watts for about a second!

no, they work - or they dont.
and topswitches usually fail by exploding btw!

BTW, another guy has one of these and thinks his has a bad L2. He says if he touches it, it intermittently works. I guess it could be a bad coil, but not likely. I'm fairly sure it's the blob of crap underneath it that went conductive - or even a cold solder joint.

Any reason to change out any of the non-electrolytics? What about the dual Schottky rectifiers or the TOP249Y Switcher? Do they get weak over time?

Tnx. Yep, I got rid of most of the glue and I changed all the electrolytics out.

get rid of the brown glue before it turns conductive.
did you replace all the caps including the small ones in the center area?

On another note, this is the power supply before the recap. Notice C17 bulging? I installed mostly Panasonic FR and 3 Nichicons where necessary.

This runs 24/7/365 - any other recommended replacements or upgrades on the PSU?

check the power is reaching the amps.
it's probably a seperate filtered supply.

in that case, it's just used as a fixed amplifier.
so scope the outputs and inputs.

here is a sheet wih some scope examples!

There's no mode select; the Composite (yellow RCA), S-Video, and Component run simultaneously so I can't do any selection or on/off except for power. But you gave me a good idea to look at the output pins.

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
    by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

    Assuming...

    Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
    by eryjus
    Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

Help with switching power supply caps
    by captain150
I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
    by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...
