    Marantz PM34 amplifier repair advise

    Hi All,

I have a Denon PM34 HiFi amplifier that presented with no output on the right channel.

On examination the main drive Darlington transistor pair was faulty together with a smaller NPN driving them.

I've obtained the matching transistors but have not soldered them in place and would like some advise before I do:

    The faulty componants are:
    Q762 2SD1894 Darlington NPN
    Q764 2SB1254 Darlington PNP
    Q752 2SC3419 NPN

My question is why did they blow in the first place and are there any componants I should check that may have led to their demise?

What I don't want to do is power up the amp with the replacement parts in place and instantly kill them.

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

I've attached the service manual and a picture of the amplifier board.

shorted speaker or wires can do that .. failed bias control circuit can also do same . turn the bias trimmer down before power up and set if all ok . limit the current somehow when powering up first time .

It does have output short-circuit and SOA protection, and the output transistors are rated 140V. Hard to tell why. Open Q752 would do it and many other reasons.

Check C804 47uF 10V, C752 100uF 16V, C716 22uF 50V, C706 did not get damaged which can happen when O/P transistors fail and the output pegs with HV DC.

I've checked the caps mentioned and they all measure fine (using a Peak ESR70)

Powering the amp via a variac and monitoring the current leaving the transformer and supplying the PCB the current is about 400mA on both side when the variac o/p is about 25V.

If I remove the 3 transitors and repeat the above test is only draws 20mA at 25V.

        Any ideas?

try turning the bias pots down , but there is likely a shorted transistor .

would turning them down be anticlockwise?

not sure on that one ,is there a service manual available ? failing that leave the outputs removed and power up and measure voltages where the bases go in the pcb reference ground and set this as low as it goes .. with it being darlingtons expect -+ 1.2 v at each outputs base .
you will need the little transistor going back in as its for bias control

                Many thanks Pete

In my original question I attached the SM.

Bias trimpot R756 at max ohms should give lowest bias.
You can measure the bias voltage (not current) across the VBE multiplier Q752 C-E it must be around 2.4V anything higher even 2.6V I think is trouble and stop.

I'll set for minimum bias, even completely off to Class B when doing checkout.

If Q752 has previously died, I would check Q704 and the nearby resistors haven't fused open R722 or the 100R base resistors "Q760, Q758".

I'm sorry I haven't been back due to pressure of work.

                      I will though...

First off I would like to thank this community as it has provided me with great information that has helped me greatly on my repair for this Marantz SR5012 AV receiver. I am creating this new thread as the other 2 that I have created here has had their original question/problem solved and I plan that this is the final thread on my repair. Please note that this is my first time repairing audio amplifiers so I may not be aware of common issues and things to know.

Lets start at what I have done so far. Random speaker popping on all channels is fixed by replacing the 2 large filter...

                        Amplifier PSU & Oscilloscope Advise
                        by Nevillet
                        Hi All,

I have been trying to do some measurements on a a small TDA2030 chip amp using a Siglent scope.
I've been powering the amp with a cheap Chinese HANMATEK HM305 bench power supply.
The problem is high frequency noise on the output of the amp when powered with the the bench supply.
If I power it using 2x 9V batteries the noise goes away.

So my question is what can I do to reduce the noise from the PSU?
Is there a filter circuit I can use to help this situation?

                        Many thanks....

Polk Audio RTi100 Plate Amplifier won't power on and intermittently honks and buzzes
                        by MrCommunistGen
My childhood best friend was killed about 9 years ago. His parents are finally letting go of his things, and they offered me his Polk RTi100 tower speakers. The Polk RTi100 towers are one of a handful of designs from the early 2000s that is a full range 3-way tower with a built-in self-powered subwoofer. This is accomplished with a plate amp integrated into the speaker input panel.

I think they used them for a while, but they've been sitting for at least a few years now. After about 40 hours of driving to their house and back (both they and I have moved in the last 9 years) I got...

How to test Subwoofer Amplifier with only a multimeter
                        by jinu_j
                        Hi Folks

Need some advice on how to test a subwoofer amplifier if i have access to only a multimeter.

                        Problem
I have a Boston Acoustics active Subwoofer (soundware S). Its rated output is 200W. But the output i am getting is very low i can barely hear/feel it even if put the gain at max. I replaced all the capacitors in the Subwoofer amplifier but still no change.

Is there anyway to test this without getting an oscilloscope/Function generator to see if the fault is with amplifier, driver or the source??

                        Any advice would be appreciated...

                        Mackie CR4 amplifier no sound
                        by UserXP
                        Hi, people.

I've got an amplifier assembly from Mackie CR4 parts. It's just an amplifier, there was no speaker housing, so I used my set of CR4s to test it.

Anyway, upon connecting everything and hooking the "new" amplifier to an audio source, the sound played clearly and strongly for the first ten seconds. I was happy it was working. Then the sound started to fade out during the playback until it was no more. After it had "dropped to zero", there were two very short intervals of sound playing at the normal volume, as if the amplifier was trying to...
